The real shift, however, was seen in the way Morocco’s security services came to deal with the Hirak Rif protest movement in Morocco’s northern Rif Valley, from October 2016 to August 2017. In reaction to the death of fisherman Mohsin Fikri –

On this solemn day, we mourn the loss of the grandmother of Nasser Zafzafi. An outstanding woman of character who passed away on the same day as Abdelkrim el Khattabi. Who today, passed away 61 years ago in Caïro.
On behalf of the entire FHRO-team, we would like to offer our condolences. May the love of family and friends comfort you during these difficult days. Again our most heartfelt condolences.
Message by MEP Tineke Strik, (Greens/EFA), to the gouvernement of Morocco, “practice what you preach”, when it comes to human rights. The Human Rights Council established in 2006 is tasked with protecting and promoting human rights around the world, and addressing violations. Morocco has to lead the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2024, on the other hand, it keeps many people in prison for political reasons.
A solidarity message to the Hirak Rif activists, and Mohamed Jelloul, 10 years of imprisonment, who launched a hunger strike last week to protest the conditions of his imprisonment. “Practice what you preach and start respecting the human right of the Riffians, and release all political prisons now!”.

Alliance Against Foreign Interference
Last night in The Hague, we listened to various stories on the impact foreign regimes have in Europe. These brave individuals from Tibet, Belarus, Iran and the Uyghur, shared each their personal story, in that other authoritarian regimes have a lot in common in the way they operate.
Similar to how authoritarian regimes learn from each other. We in the diaspora can also learn from each other, and form a block.
The ‘Alliance Against Foreign Interference’ panel was organized by the S&D. With co-speakers: Susanne Kamerling from Associate Fellow Institute for Security and Global Affairs (ISGA), Mpanzu Bamenga (D66), Habib El Kaddouri (Monitor Lange Arm Rabat) and Thijs Reuten (S&D).

Today seven years ago
October 28, 2016 in Al Hoceima. Today, seven years ago, Mohsin Fikri died in a terrible way. He was crushed in a garbage truc. In response, his dead led to the Hirak-movement in the city, in the rest of Rif. And across the Mediterranean Sea, into the streets of Europe were as thousands in the diaspora took part in the Hirak-movement.
The face of the Hirak-movement Nasser Zefzafi, who led the movement, along with hundreds of activists, who were involved in organising demonstrations, who were calling for an independent investigation into the death of Mohsin Fikri, jobs, an end to corruption, development of the regio, better infrastructure, access to healthcare & education, and the demilitarization of the region, were arrested in May 2017.
In June 2018, a court in Casablanca sentenced the then 39-year old Zefzafi, and other activists to 20 years in prison.
BREAKING‼️
After 25 jaars, the European Parliament adopts a resolution that calls on Morocco to stop intimidating journalists notably Omar Radi, to stop harassing and intimidating Hirak Rif-activists, to free all politicial prisoners including the 2018 Sakhraov Prize finalist Nasser Zefzafi and to investigate the role of Morocco in attempting to influence MEPs in the recent corruption scandals.
The resolution that received a majority was initiated by:
Tineke Strik Ignazio Corrao Jordi Solé Ana Miranda, Mounir Satouri, Rosa D'Amato Francisco Guerreiro Hannah Neumann Alviina Alametsä Saskia Bricmont Heidi Hautala Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield on behalf of the Greens/EFA in the European Parliament

Such a historical moment for the Riffian community. For the first time ever, the European Parliament adopted an amendment on releasing the political prisoners including the Hirak activists, stop harrasing and intimidating the activists in the diaspora. And to develop the historically marginalised regions such as the Rif.
The Amendment 48 that was initiated by Thijs Reuten Pedro Marques Tonino Picula on behalf of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament received 320 votes.
Next week, for the first time in decades, the European Parliament will debate a resolution condemning ’s human rights abuses and the repression of free press in particular.
My proposal regarding the human rights situation of the Hirak and the continued imprisonment of human rights icon Nasser will be part of this debate and resolution.
The peaceful Hirak popular movement originated after the cruel death of fishmonger Mohcine Fikri in Al Hoceima on 28 October 2016. Thousands of people took to the streets to demand better education, healthcare, and employment opportunities in the historically sidelined and predominantly Amazigh region of Arif. The Moroccan government responded with unrelenting crackdowns and the arrest of hundreds of protestors, including Nasser Zefzafi, who was subjected to torture and other inhuman treatment in detention.
The Moroccan government continues to crack down on the Hirak, including by targeting journalists who refuse to follow the government’s official line on the protest movement, spying on human rights activists using Pegasus software, and even intimidating diaspora activists on EU soil.
Zefzafi, a finalist for the 2018 Sakharov Prize, is currently serving a 20-year term on politically motivated charges. Morocco must immediately end its repression of journalists and release all Hirak political prisoners.

Last Saturday, 10 December was Human Rights Day which marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
FHRO was present at Amnesty International in Amsterdam, to recall that human rights are universal and FHRO will continue to monitor human rights.
As part of Human Rights Day, participants were encouraged to write a letter to call for Nasser Zafzafi, who is currently serving a 20 year sentence for speaking out, to be immediate and unconditional released.
On Human Rights Day, FHRO also commits to re-double its efforts to stand with and speak out for the oppressed and those under threat, and wherever they may live.
We would like to thank everyone who was present in Amsterdam and in Antwerpen. And those who wrote and signed the online letter.
After six years fishmonger Mouhcine Fikri was crushed in a garbage in the Rif region, FHRO and Friends of the Rif will reflect on the so called Hirak movement
With special guests Rif-activist NAWAL BENAISSA, journalist and human rights defender ALI LMRABET, Hirak refugee ASHRAF EL IDRISSI, Historian SELIM BALOUATI LAKHLOUFI and many more..
