I won the pissst award!

For 40 years a bunch of ‘boys’ descend on a bach every July in Turangi to fish.

I remember in the 2000s turning up with kegs of beer, beer towers, drinking games and every night it was on like donkey Kong.
This week it was just as much fun, no kegs, plenty of alc free options and the next (third) generation learning how to banter, cook meat, fillet fish and drink (or not).

The pissst award came about many years ago when an inebriated individual boiled the jug without any water and with quite an explosion.
Now expertly mounted it has been handed out every year for booze related carry on and distraction.

In total irony I was nominated as our fishing was delayed in more than one car park as people saw the State of Play sign on my truck and wanted to talk beer, tasty beer, without any alcohol.

I always have some beer to swap for stories.

I may not have caught a fish this year, I do have a trophy for change and good choice Haha!!

So why am I so happy?
Because it’s now a habit. I don’t think I do. Every Saturday morning I wake up (naturally) and Nicky and I head to ParkRun for 8am start.

In the beginning it’s new and exciting. The speed wobbles kick on that first Saturday it rains or when you’re travelling- excuses creap in to the mind. And you stay true to your commitment.

And then the magic happens.
You meet new Park Run friends. Your time drops.
You end up with more weekend
The times we have been away we do the local parkrun and see a whole new part of beautiful New Zealand.
A new ritual at the bakery for danish.
And wait for our email of how we placed two hours later.

The power of the streak.

No different to going alcohol free.

I started Dry July in 2020. I went all in. After reading Peter Fitzsimmons book the ‘Great Aussie Slimdown’ - it’s a simple formula:
+ No booze
+ More steps and activity you enjoy
+ Less sh*t food
Measure what goes in and measure your progress. It really is addictive feeling good and in control of you. I was over being fat, foggy and unfit.

I kept going. 45 kgs down in 45 weeks. Finished corporate life to start my second.

My DryJuly 2020 continues….

Kia Ora State of Play Whanau
Completed my first exam last night in 28 years.
I was the last to finish. And the first to get a selfie handing in my paper! Happy and relieved.

Monday nights at city AUT campus followed by dinner date night. Why are restaurants just so much better on a Monday (Pici, Ragtag, French place upper queen st, Mumbaiwala, Chop Chop, Miann, Tobi).

It’s weird to do a uni paper for enjoyment. Not for the points. We are enrolled for next semester too.

But man it makes my brain hurt. This old dog takes a while to learn these new tricks.

One thing is for sure, Watane is the most inspiring teacher. Energy. Most fun of the week.

When I ditched the booze it was the amount of extra time that surprised me the most. Up early ready. Browsing things to do late. Today’s corporate athlete requires skill, health and an enquiring mind. The three legs of the stool sharing the load.

Isn’t it cool we can keep learning. Get better. Understand. Although I don’t think doing tests ever becomes fun, the reward for effort is a good hit.

It’s better to stay in the game! And making the choice to bench the alcohol a few years back was the best coaches call made.
Because the referee if life was going to call time if something didn’t change.

Not your typical brewery shot. For zeros it’s important to have a good lab.
We have three batches through the brewery (90000 cans!). And they need to be perfect.
So I’m all tasted out today.
Tomorrow our Sunbreaker additions go in ready for packing on Friday and a double brew of IPA early next week.

1295 days ago, this was my last pint of alcohol. A Lagunitas 6.2 % IPA.
