It's chilly at the moment, which means it's a great time to eat chilli! Embrace the Tex-Mex vibe with our Organic Chilli Con Carne recipe base from our Organic Meal Solutions and Recipe Bases range ๐Ÿฅฐ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ

Super easy to make and packed full of our unique blend of globally sourced, certified organic Tex-Mex spices plus a hint of chilli heat, it's the perfect winter warmer.

Here are some tasty options to mix it up a little...

1๏ธโƒฃ Cheesy Delight: Stir in a handful of grated cheddar cheese just before serving to make your chilli creamy and extra delicious. The cheese melts into the chilli, adding richness and depth.

2๏ธโƒฃ Veggie Boost: Add extra vegetables like diced bell peppers, carrots, or zucchini to the mix for added nutrition and crunch. This not only enhances the texture but also makes the meal even more wholesome.

3๏ธโƒฃ Spice it Up: If you love more heat, add a chopped fresh jalapeรฑo or a pinch of cayenne pepper. You can adjust the spiciness to your taste and give your chilli an extra kick.

4๏ธโƒฃ Sweet Balance: Add a spoonful of brown sugar or a splash of apple cider vinegar to balance the heat with a touch of sweetness. This creates a more complex and rounded flavour profile.

5๏ธโƒฃ Hearty Addition: Mix in a can of corn kernels for extra heartiness and texture. This will not only bulk up the meal but also add a nice variation in taste.

Enjoy!

๐ŸŒฟโœจ If you have left-over herbs or spices knocking about in the cupboard, it's time to put them to use by making your own herb and spice infused oils. These perfect aromatic enhancers are ideal for elevating the taste of your meals, and the perfect use of left-over herbs and spices ๐ŸŽ‰

1๏ธโƒฃ Creating Infused Oils: Start with choosing a selection of herbs and/or spices - be as brave as you want (although there are some suggestions below). Place them in a clean, dry jar, and cover with an oil like olive oil. Seal the jar and let it sit in a cool, dark place for 1-2 weeks. Strain the oil through a fine mesh to capture the concentrated taste of the herbs and spices.

2๏ธโƒฃ Taste Enhancements: Infused oils carry the robust tastes of their ingredients, such as the fiery punch of chilli or the earthy undertones of rosemary - essentially you have created a taste enhancer that transforms simple dishes into aromatic poetry.

3๏ธโƒฃ Where and When: Use the oils and add a taste explosion to any dish. Drizzle over salads, brush before grilling, or stir into batters.

๐Ÿฅฐ Garlic Thyme Oil Mashed Potatoes: Elevate your mashed potatoes by mixing in garlic and thyme infused oil. The rich taste of garlic and the subtle hint of thyme is the perfect compliment to mashed potatoes (PS make more than you think you will need for the family...seriously).

๐Ÿฅฐ Cinnamon Spice Cake: Add cinnamon infused oil to your cake batter for a dessert that brings a perfect balance of sweet and spice.

๐Ÿฅฐ Chili Oil Drizzled Cornbread: Feeling like something a bit out of the ordinary, make cornbread but give it a kick by drizzling chilli infused oil on top before baking. Itโ€™s a simple touch that adds a whole new level of taste to a classic US comfort food.

๐ŸŒโœจ So, start with a bottle of oil, mix in your favourite left-over herbs and spices, and end up with a kitchen countertop staple that will bring endless taste possibilities when cooking. The next time you reach for oil in your kitchen, let it be one you infused yourself - you will definitely taste the difference. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’–

Have you ever wondered how we actually taste food? From the tongue-tingles of cayenne to the sweet overtones of cinnamon, each spice we use is a key to unlocking unique the unique tastes of the food we prepare.

1๏ธโƒฃ Taste Bud Basics: Taste buds detect five basic tastes, but spices can trigger complex reactions, enhancing our food in extraordinary ways.
2๏ธโƒฃ Spice Dynamics: When spices combine, they create layers of taste. This complexity makes every dish a unique culinary experience.
3๏ธโƒฃ Culinary Explorations: Each spice's distinct properties can enhance a dish, whether it's adding a smoky depth with paprika or a fresh zing with zesty sumac. And it is so very important to understand these properties as it allows us to master the art of cooking.

Let's put this into practice with some quick and easy dishes...

๐ŸฅฐSpicy Tomato Soup: Heat things up with tomatoes, a dash of cayenne pepper, onion, garlic, and cream. Blend cooked tomatoes with the spices and simmer for a stunningly satisfying warming bowl.

๐ŸฅฐCinnamon Honey Glazed Carrots: Sweet meets spicy in this easy side dish. Roast carrots and drizzle with a mix of honey and ground cinnamon for a delightful finish. It's a genuine restaurant quality dish, and so very easy.

๐ŸฅฐPeppercorn Steak Rub: Transform your steak with a robust rub (this is one of our favourites!). Mix crushed peppercorns, sea salt, and garlic powder for a flavourful crust that grills to perfection.

๐ŸŒโœจ Whether itโ€™s the simple act of adding pepper to a steak or blending exotic spices for a curry, the science behind how we taste spices reminds us of the incredible intricacies of cooking and eating.

๐ŸŒฟโœจ Ever wonder why your favourite spice blends taste so magical? ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿฒ Let's discover how the tastes of individual spices complement each other, creating flavours that are much more than the sum of their parts!

๐Ÿ”ฅ From the warming allure of Garam Masala to the vibrant kick of Za'atar, each spice we blend in our homes and kitchens is a testament to centuries of culinary wisdom. ๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ But why do these combinations work so wonderfully together?

1๏ธโƒฃ Balance & Harmony: Each spice in a blend plays its part to create a harmonious flavour profile. The sharp heat of pepper can be rounded out by the sweet notes of cinnamon, and the earthiness of cumin pairs beautifully with the tang of coriander. This balance ensures no single flavour overwhelms the others.

2๏ธโƒฃ Complexity: When spices mingle, they offer layers of flavours, thanks to their volatile oils reacting with each other. This complexity is what makes each spoonful of your favourite curry or tagine a journey through taste and aroma.

3๏ธโƒฃ Cultural Storytelling: Spice blends are deeply rooted in the cultures they come from, each combination telling a story of regional ingredients, climate, and historical trade routes. The spices used not only complement each other but also represent a piece of the world's rich tapestry of culinary traditions.

๐ŸŒโœจ Whether it's the bright spark of lemon zest meeting the deep, woodsy notes of rosemary in Italian dishes, or the peppery punch of ginger warming the coolness of mint in Asian cuisines, these blends remind us of the global kitchen's interconnectedness and creativity.

So next time you reach for that jar of curry powder, Chinese Five Spice, or Herbes de Provence, remember the magic isn't just in the blend itself but in the incredible way these spices come together, offering us a taste of history, culture, and the wonders of human culinary invention. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’–

Oregano is the quintessential herb that brings a touch of the Mediterranean to a wide array of dishes. Distinguished by its bold, earthy essence, it offers a subtle peppery taste with a slight hint of mint, enhancing dishes with a touch of what feels like sun-kissed warmth.

๐Ÿ… Sauce Enhancement: Amplify tomato-based dishes, like pasta sauce or bruschetta, with a generous touch of oregano. ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ…

๐Ÿฅš Breakfast Upgrade: Sprinkle oregano over scrambled eggs or frittatas for a Mediterranean morning twist. ๐Ÿณโ˜€๏ธ

Let's dive into the world of Cumin โ€“ an earthy, aromatic powerhouse essential in global cuisine. Cumin, with its distinct smoky flavour, brings depth and warmth to any dish. It's a versatile spice, offering hints of nutty, peppery, and somewhat citrusy undertones that enrich and balance both complex and simple recipes.

Understanding the impact of whole and ground Cumin in cooking is key. Whole cumin seeds add bursts of flavour and a crunchy texture, perfect for toasting and adding to dishes like soups and stews, allowing their full-bodied taste to meld beautifully over time. Meanwhile, ground Cumin offers a concentrated, immediate earthiness, ideal for spice rubs, marinades, and sauces where its robust flavour can stand out and define the dish.

Here are some innovative ways to weave cumin into everyday meals:

๐Ÿฅ˜ Savory Start: Kickstart your dishes by toasting whole cumin seeds before adding them to curries for an enhanced, smoky flavour.

๐Ÿž Bake with a Twist: Incorporate ground cumin into bread doughs or scone mixes for a warm, earthy aroma and taste.

๐ŸŒฟ Veggie Boost: Sprinkle whole or ground cumin over roasted vegetables to elevate their natural sweetness with a spicy edge.

๐Ÿณ Morning Zest: Add a dash of ground cumin to scrambled eggs or avocado toast for a hearty, flavourful breakfast.

๐Ÿฅค Cool Refreshment: Stir a pinch of ground cumin into lemonade or a smoothie for a refreshing drink with a spicy kick.

๐Ÿจ Sweet Surprise: Experiment by adding a small amount of cumin to chocolate desserts or fruit salads for an unexpected flavour contrast.

๐Ÿข Grill Magic: Use cumin seeds in your meat or veggie marinades to impart a smoky, aromatic quality to your grilled dishes.

๐Ÿธ Unique Cocktails: Infuse your cocktails with a hint of ground cumin for a warm, intriguing flavour.

Cardamom, with its complex aromatic profile, brings a unique and enchanting taste to dishes. It's a spice that carries hints of eucalyptus, lemon, and mint, creating a slightly sweet and pungent flavour that's both refreshing and warmly aromatic.

However, it's important to recognise how whole and ground Cardamom transform your culinary creations. On the flip side, ground Cardamom delivers an immediate, vibrant burst, perfect for baking and desserts where its sweet-spicy notes come to the forefront.

Here are some interesting ways to incorporate cardamom into your daily dishes:

Tea Time: Elevate your tea by boiling it with whole cardamom pods for a comforting, aromatic brew. ๐Ÿตโœจ

Baked Delights: Add ground cardamom to bread, cakes, or cookies for a unique, sweet spice twist. ๐Ÿž๐Ÿฐ

Welcome to the spicy side of life with Mrs Rogers' exploration of Black Pepper โ€“ a staple in every New Zealand kitchen and a hero in countless recipes around the world!

Let's start with the choice between whole and ground Black Pepper, as this choice doesn't just affect your seasoning technique; it's about the intensity and timing of flavour release in your cooking.

Whole peppercorns are perfect for infusing dishes with a nuanced, earthy warmth, ideal in slow cooks or as part of a spice blend. Meanwhile, ground Black Pepper offers a quick, potent hit of piquancy, essential for finishing dishes or for recipes requiring a uniform spice distribution.

Here are some quick ways to use black pepper every day:

Citrus Zest: Enhance fruit salads with black pepper and a hint of citrus zest for an unexpected flavor twist. ๐ŸŠ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ

Sweet Treats: Sprinkle ground pepper on strawberries or dark chocolate to deepen the taste. ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿซ

Coffee Kick: Add a pinch to your coffee grounds before brewing for a spicy kick. โ˜•๐Ÿ”ฅ

Marinade Magic: Mix with soy sauce and garlic for a robust meat marinade. ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ’ฅ

Herb Infusion: Combine with rosemary and sea salt for a fragrant roast seasoning. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ—

Peppered Honey: Stir into honey and drizzle over cheese for a savory-sweet combo. ๐Ÿง€๐Ÿฏ

Spicy Sweets: Incorporate into baking recipes like cookies or pies for warmth. ๐Ÿช๐Ÿ”ฅ

Cocktail Edge: Rim your favorite Bloody Mary or cocktail glass with black pepper and salt. ๐Ÿนโœจ

Salad Sprinkle: Toss with fresh greens, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar for a peppery salad boost. ๐Ÿฅ—๐ŸŒถ๏ธ

Cinnamon Ground Bags of Flavour 11/03/2024

Cinnamon's instantly recognisable flavour infuses a welcoming warm, sweet taste and complexity into a multitude of dishes, making it one of the most beloved spices worldwide. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ‘ƒ

The choice between whole and ground cinnamon is more than just a matter of convenience; it's a decision that can profoundly affect the flavour profile, taste and complexity of your dishes. ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿฒ

Whole cinnamon sticks, with their sturdy, fragrant bark, infuse slow-cooked dishes with a subtle, spicy essence.
