Taiari, The river carved and shaped by our legendary taniwha Matamata.
•
Taiari is the correct name of this river. The name “Taiari” refers to the rivers clear shining waters. As Tangata whenua (indigenous people) our connection to this river stretches back over 40 generations. We view this river as an ancestor who is a part of us, and we a part of it.
•
However, much like the rivers health, it’s name has been degraded since the arrival of Europeans and western ideologies. Taiari has been incorrectly called “taieri” a word which has no meaning at all, it does not represent the river and therefore has no mana.
•
Our placenames often encapsulate the physical, spiritual and ecological aspects of an area. Restoring the correct placenames will ensure that we are on the correct path to restoring the full health and mauri of an area and ultimately the environment itself.
