do you know who's phone this is, left at pi centre contact Irene
Mālō e lelei and a warm Pacific Islands greeting to you all!
My name is Petelō Sinamoni, and I am the Pacific Outreach Programmes & Community Liaison at the Pacific Islands centre of the Otago University.
Part of my role is to get involved with our community and hopefully build a better relationship between the university and our Pacific Island communities and in the process make the experience of preparing, applying for, and studing at University, a little less stressful for our families.
Next Wednesday 28th of August 2024, 6:00pm at the Kings High School Performing Arts Centre: 270 Bay View Road, South Dunedin, Dunedin 9012, we are running a tertiary information evening with light refreshments after. The event aims to help our communities understand the changes that will come into effect with the University now that the Fees Free for first years policy is ending at the end of 2024. We will be covering information on what Scholarships are available out there for our students that want to apply for University in the future, What options will they have in terms of accomodation, and what kind of assistance they can have with studylink.
We encourage everyone in our Pacific Islands Communities to attend because preparations for University life does not begin in year 12 or 13, it begins in year 9 if we want our youth to have every option available to them when they need it.
Mālō ‘aupito, we hope to see you there.

Posting on behalf of Balmacewen Intermediate School
We are just seeking additional support from our wider community to see if there is anyone who would be keen to come and share their culture with some passionate 11-13 year olds who attend a local intermediate Pasifika group.
If you have experience in Pasifika dance, singing or language and would be willing to donate 45 minutes of your time every Monday morning, we would love to hear from you!
This would be really valuable to these children.
Transport can be arranged if needed

Pūtahi Manawa announces new Pacific health scholarship
Applications have opened for a new scholarship aiming to address the under-representation of Pacific health professionals in New Zealand’s genetic counselling workforce. The Pūtahi Manawa | Healthy Hearts for Aotearoa New Zealand funded scholarship will support a Pacific student to complete a postgraduate master’s degree in Genetic Counselling at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Australia.
The Pacific Master of Genetic Counselling Scholarship aims to address the lack of diversity in this field by reducing barriers to entry. There are currently no Genetic Counsellor health professionals of Pacific heritage working in Aotearoa and this scholarship aims to change that.
The successful candidate will have a drive to deliver better health outcomes for their extended Pacific communities and will have completed a bachelor’s degree in a related health or science discipline. Genetic Counsellors are postgraduate trained allied health professionals who support people and families impacted by, or at increased risk of having a health condition with a genetic basis.
What the scholarship covers:
• UTS study fees ($94,000)
• Four 1-week on-site study trips to Sydney ($8,000)
• Travel and accommodation costs related to placements (to be determined, depending on location)
The Pacific Master of Genetic Counselling Scholarship is funded by Pūtahi Manawa | Healthy Hearts for Aotearoa New Zealand which is a Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) funded by the Tertiary Education Commission. For more information, please see https://www.putahimanawa.ac.nz/.
Key dates:
• Now – Scholarship applications are open
• 31 July 2024 – UTS Prerequisite submissions close
• 1 August 2024 – UTS applications open
• 31 August 2024 – Scholarship and UTS applications close
• September 2024 – Applicant interviews
• October-November 2024 – Results announced.
Please click here for more information and click here for the application form.
Students considering the scholarship are likely to be final year science students, or perhaps humanities such as psychology or social work, and nursing but with genetic papers to level 2 completed within the last 10 years.
