Our purpose is to educate and guide lifters on their journey to becoming athletes and achieving their goals.

How to structure your training sessions, how many sets and reps to do, and how to progress over time

Programming is how you plan and organize your training sessions, based on your goals, experience, and preferences. There are many factors to consider when designing a powerlifting program, such as frequency, intensity, volume, specificity, variation, recovery, and progression.

Here are some general guidelines and tips for beginners who want to start powerlifting programming:

Frequency: Frequency is how often you train each lift or muscle group. For beginners, I would recommended to train each lift at least twice a week, to maximize learning and adaptation. You can either follow a full-body routine, where you do all three lifts in one session, or a split routine, where you divide the lifts into different sessions. For example, you can do a squat/bench/deadlift split, a push/pull/legs split, or an upper/lower split.

Elbows Forward:

How to Do It: Position your elbows in front of the bar, aligning them with your torso.
Benefits: This position promotes a more upright torso, reducing the risk of leaning too far forward during the squat. It’s especially beneficial for lifters who have a more quad-dominant squat style1.

Elbows Back:

How to Do It: Draw your elbows behind the bar, which can help create a tight upper back.
Benefits: Having your elbows back can increase tension in the upper back, providing a solid base for the bar and potentially improving stability for those with a posterior-chain dominant squat2.
Finding Your Balance:

Experiment: Try both positions to see which offers better control and comfort.
Watch Your Wrists: Ensure that your wrist position remains neutral to avoid strain, regardless of elbow position.
Consult a Coach: Work with a coach to fine-tune your form for optimal performance and safety.
