In association with WKKONZ, the Combat Karate League Aotearoa (CKLA) has completed its first tournament season!!

With Sanchin Freestyle Karate and Edsoma NZ Eternal Dragon School of Martial Arts hosting tournaments for the season.

We welcomed Upper Hutt Martial Arts Academy and Free Spirit Fighting Arts NZ as participants over the season as well. We would welcome any other dojo's or schools in area or in Aotearoa to compete.

You don’t have to get angry in order to get your adrenaline pumping in a confrontation. In fact, if you find yourself in a physical confrontation, getting angry will actually hinder your performance.

Anger causes your mind to become confused and to think less clearly. It causes your actions to be controlled by your emotions rather than your rational mind. Letting your emotions control your actions is always a dangerous proposition.

Instead of getting angry in these situations, you should go into mushin. Mushin literally means “mind, no mind.” This simply means that you are acting without consciously thinking about what you are doing. You are allowing your subconscious mind to take control, not your anger.

This is why you perform the same techniques and the same fight scenarios over and over again in the dojo. This secures the techniques into your subconscious mind so that you can perform them without thinking, when you need them.

Mushin is much like driving a car. When you first started driving, you had to concentrate on every part of the driving process. You had to consciously think to yourself to turn on the turn signal and to start slowing down, but after several years of driving, simple things like turning your turn signal on, or slowing down when you come to a turn, come naturally.

You don’t have to consciously think to yourself, “Now I need to start slowing down.” You just do it naturally, without thinking about it. This is the mind in mushin. You can perform actions without your mind telling you what to do because you have performed them so many times that they are now automatic.
