Do you share your central idea or statement of inquiry with your students right from the start? Maybe you post it on the wall or include it in your presentation slides. This was once a common practice in my teaching, but I've come to realize that it might not be the best approach.
Instead of telling students the understanding upfront, consider guiding them to discover it themselves. By using guiding questions, students can explore, see patterns, make connections, and ultimately arrive at the conceptual understanding on their own.
Think of it like going to see a movie—you wouldn’t want someone to spoil the plot twist at the end, right? The same goes for learning. Let’s allow students the joy of discovery, rather than giving away the ending before they’ve had a chance to explore the story.
In concept-based classrooms, there are two approaches: the deductive approach, where we tell students the concept up front, and an inductive approach, where students uncover the concept through exploration. I’ve found that the latter leads to deeper, more meaningful learning. What approach are you using in your classroom?

Schools worldwide are embracing an innovative approach that puts student agency at the forefront. By starting with guiding questions and exploring factual examples, students are encouraged to seek patterns and make connections. As they progress, they articulate their understanding in the form of conceptual understandings or generalizations.
This shift is incredibly powerful, engaging students as capable thinkers and empowering them to own their learning and express their ideas. Let's foster a generation of self-directed, insightful learners!

When introducing a brand-new concept, a deductive approach works best: start with a definition, then explore examples and non-examples. After all, expecting students to identify a concept they've never heard of would be like asking them to guess!
But for familiar concepts, an inductive approach can be more effective. By examining examples and non-examples first, students can collaboratively build a class definition, fostering deeper understanding.
It's all about choosing the right approach to ensure our students grasp the material fully and meaningfully.

Let's move beyond limiting our students to just one conceptual understanding per unit or six per year. Take mathematics as an example. Initially, we might teach students that data can be organized and represented to make comparisons and interpretations easier. But what if we add more layers of understanding?
• A scale can represent large or small quantities on a graph.
• The shape of the graph can summarize the data effectively.
• Conducting chance experiments helps us understand the likelihood of events, and remember, past outcomes don't determine future chances!

One of the biggest misconceptions we see worldwide is schools developing just one conceptual understanding in a unit. But let’s rethink that. If we've got six to eight weeks in a unit, our students are capable of grasping so much more. Imagine the possibilities!
In a Concept-Based Inquiry classroom, our goal is to empower students to achieve five to nine understandings per unit. Why settle for just one when our students have the potential for so much more? A system designed for only one understanding in six to eight weeks is selling our students short.
In the late 80s, the term "number sense" gained recognition as researchers emphasized its importance in mathematics education.
But what exactly is number sense?
It's the ability to perform flexible mental computation, numerical estimation, and quantitative judgment—crucial skills for young learners.
Imagine transforming your mathematics classroom to foster these capabilities in your students. The Concept-Based Inquiry Mathematics Project is here to help!
The Concept-Based Inquiry Mathematics Project is a comprehensive curriculum for elementary educators to revolutionize mathematics teaching. This pilot program provides ready-to-use units, lessons, and resources, empowering students to think like mathematicians while saving teachers countless hours of planning.
