The Department of Biology, College of Science, UP Baguio is proud to announce the appointment of Asst. Prof. Deign Frolley C. Soriano, MSc as the new chair of the department.

Asst. Prof. Soriano earned his BS Biology degree from the University of the Philippines Baguio in 2016, where he focused on an undergraduate research project examining the identification and distribution patterns of earthworms in selected sites in Abra and Ifugao, Cordillera Administrative Region, Philippines. In 2022, he obtained his MSc in Environmental Management from the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, supported by the Chevening Scholarship programme. Staying true to his roots, he conducted his master’s research dissertation on assessing the ecological quality of the Abra River watershed in Northern Luzon, Philippines, using the Remote Sensing Ecological Index (RSEI) Model.

During his time at UP Baguio, Asst. Prof. Soriano actively participated in numerous research projects, ranging from biodiversity assessments in urban forests and island ecosystems to aquatic ecosystems across Northern Luzon and the Cordillera Administrative Region.

In addition to his academic record and research endeavors, Asst. Prof. Soriano is involved in various organizations and public service initiatives, particularly focusing on environmental conservation and sustainable development. He was a Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Academic Fellow in the Global Environmental Issues and Natural Resource Management program at the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center, University of Montana. His dedication to research earned him the distinction of becoming a grand finalist for the EWC Earth Optimism Awards for Southeast Asia in 2020 in the Research and Discovery category. In 2021, he was selected as a NextGen Leadership Program Fellow by the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation - Transformative Leadership Institute.

Asst. Prof. Soriano has held various committee assignments at both the college and university levels and served as the Student Relations Officer at UP Baguio from 2023 to 2024. He also actively contributes to the welfare and well-being of the academic community as a member and officer of the All UP Academic Employees Union - Baguio Chapter.

Asst. Prof. Reymark C. Ereje, RCh, MSc, from the Department of Physical Sciences, and Mr. Melvin Jake D. Manaog, a graduate student in the MS Conservation and Restoration Ecology program of the Department of Biology, have been selected as Luzon Primers (participants) in the PRIMe-TP (Plastics Research Intensive Methods Training Program) Luzon program. This two-week, all-expenses-paid training is designed for early-career plastics researchers from Luzon. 💯🌊

Participants will learn new methods and techniques in field collection, FTIR and microscopy, and the application of artificial intelligence or machine learning in plastics research. 💻🔬

PRIMe-TP Luzon is a project of the Microbial Oceanography Laboratory of the UP Marine Science Institute, the Marine Environment and Resources Foundation, Inc., Holcim, One Earth - One Ocean and the Circular Explorer, in cooperation with Batangas State University and VIP Center for Oceanographic Research and Aquatic Life Sciences.

The QuICMaPP Facility congratulates Ms. Aliah Gie Fajardo Zabala for being one of the recipients of the 2024 TaiwanICDF Scholarship to pursue an International Master Program in Information Systems and Applications (IMPISA) at the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), one of the top Universities in Taiwan.

Aliah served as Research Assistant at the QuICMaPP Facility from July 2023 to February 2024 shortly after graduating Magna Cum Laude for the degree BS Computer Science at UP Baguio. As an RA, she helped complete field works to examine microplastics and macroplastics accumulation in Ambuklao Lake, as well as in the development of QuICMaPP's AI-based models for plastic object detection using drone images.

The Topological Data Analysis Research Group congratulates its member Jhunas Paul T. Viernes, MSc for being named an IMU-CDC GRAID Program Fellow!

Established by the International Mathematical Union Center for Developing Countries in 2017, the Graduate Research Assistantships in Developing Countries (GRAID) Program provides support for emerging research groups working in developing countries with established international partners.

As a GRAID Program fellow, Jhunas will assist the TDA group in completing research projects under the supervision of Dr. David Uminksy from the University of Chicago. He will also receive stipend directly from the IMU for a period of up to four (4) years.

📣IN OTHER NEWS | 𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗘𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗦 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗦𝗟𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗣𝗦, 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢𝗢𝗟𝗕𝗢𝗫 ⛰️🛰️

The local government units of Baguio City, La Trinidad, Itogon, Sablan, Tuba and Tublay (BLISTT) received updated landslide maps and monitoring toolbox from two research projects funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Grants-in-Aid Program.

Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (LDRRMO) personnel from BLISTT received landslide susceptibility maps, vulnerability or risk maps, rainfall threshold, landslide sensors, monitoring systems and mobile applications on Thursday, July 12, 224.
Said maps were developed from the Modelling and Understanding Landslide Events (MULAT) in BLISTT program that analyzed rainfall threshold and its direct impact to landslide occurrences for the past 54 years.

The MULAT-BLISTT program was implemented by the University of the Philippines-Baguio (UPB) and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau-Cordillera Administrative Region (MGB-CAR) from July 2022 to July 2024.

At the same time, the University of the Cordilleras (UC) implemented the Cordillera Administrative landslide Monitoring Integrated Toolbox (CALaMI-T) research that developed a website and mobile application for real-time monitoring and landslide early warning system.

Dr. Dymphna Nolasco Javier, program leader of MULAT-BLISTT hopes that the local government units as beneficiaries of the research will utilize the high-resolution information on rainfall-induced landslides (RIL) maps in updating their DRRM plans towards disaster mitigation and resilience.

Meanwhile, Dr. Nathaniel Vincent Lubrica, project leader of CALaMI-T said the website and mobile application will be cascaded to the BLISTT LGUs in the coming months for testing and monitoring.

“Hopefully, the LGUs will see the importance of the technology and integrate this in their disaster and emergency operations,” he said.
He added that per MGB records, the Cordillera being a mountainous region is among the areas in the country prone to landslides often triggered by heavy rainfall. – JM Samoan

The UPB College of Science Dean Dr. Dymphna Javier with the faculty of the UP Diliman College of Engineering (UPD COE), headed by Dean Dr. Maria Antonia Tanchuling, and selected Deans and Program heads of Engineering SUCs in the region, held exploratory discussions on collaboration to expand graduate engineering programs nationwide on 31 May 2024 at the Chancellor’s Board Room, UP Baguio.

The initiative is part of the DOST-funded Engineering R&D for Technology (ERDT) program headed by UPD COE, which aims to boost the number of Master's and Doctoral Engineering graduates and thus make a significant and sustainable impact in advancing S&T in our country.

The VCAA works closely with deans, department chairs, and other academic heads to ensure the quality and integrity of the university's academic offerings.

Dr. Jerico B. Bacani, Professor of Mathematics from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, UP Baguio is appointed as the new Vice Chancellor for Administration. The Vice Chancellor for Administration (VCA) is responsible for overseeing the administrative operations of the university. The VCA works closely with other university officials to implement policies and ensure that administrative processes align with the goals and objectives of UP Baguio and the UP System.
