The Science Research Center of the College of Science is offering a workshop that will expose its participants to 𝘾. 𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙣𝙨 handling, maintenance, and assays. This workshop offers a 2-day hands-on training with this animal model. The workshop will be held on Oct. 11-12.

The Department of Biology, College of Science, UP Baguio is proud to announce the appointment of Asst. Prof. Deign Frolley C. Soriano, MSc as the new chair of the department.

Asst. Prof. Soriano earned his BS Biology degree from the University of the Philippines Baguio in 2016, where he focused on an undergraduate research project examining the identification and distribution patterns of earthworms in selected sites in Abra and Ifugao, Cordillera Administrative Region, Philippines. In 2022, he obtained his MSc in Environmental Management from the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, supported by the Chevening Scholarship programme. Staying true to his roots, he conducted his master’s research dissertation on assessing the ecological quality of the Abra River watershed in Northern Luzon, Philippines, using the Remote Sensing Ecological Index (RSEI) Model.

During his time at UP Baguio, Asst. Prof. Soriano actively participated in numerous research projects, ranging from biodiversity assessments in urban forests and island ecosystems to aquatic ecosystems across Northern Luzon and the Cordillera Administrative Region.

In addition to his academic record and research endeavors, Asst. Prof. Soriano is involved in various organizations and public service initiatives, particularly focusing on environmental conservation and sustainable development. He was a Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Academic Fellow in the Global Environmental Issues and Natural Resource Management program at the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center, University of Montana. His dedication to research earned him the distinction of becoming a grand finalist for the EWC Earth Optimism Awards for Southeast Asia in 2020 in the Research and Discovery category. In 2021, he was selected as a NextGen Leadership Program Fellow by the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation - Transformative Leadership Institute.

Asst. Prof. Soriano has held various committee assignments at both the college and university levels and served as the Student Relations Officer at UP Baguio from 2023 to 2024. He also actively contributes to the welfare and well-being of the academic community as a member and officer of the All UP Academic Employees Union - Baguio Chapter.

Dr. Roland M. Hipol is a Professor in the Department of Biology at UP Baguio, known for his remarkable research contributions in mycology, microbiology, and molecular biology. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Ateneo de Manila University and earned his Master's and PhD in Botany with a minor in Molecular Biology from the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

The proposal defense of Ms. Cotelo is moved to a later time, 3-5pm on the same date, September 23, 2024, for members of the panel and the graduate faculty to participate in the local assessment of the BS Physics program. Please keep posted on the venue announcement.

She will be presenting her study entitled "Malacofaunal diversity and distribution as potential ecological indicators of habitat quality in selected urban green spaces in Baguio City, Philippines" at the SRC Conference Rm on Sept 23, 2024.

ATTENTION (Thesis Students) : ‼️

Please be informed that the department is implementing new guidelines for scheduling for the use of laboratory rooms and equipment.

All students are required to scan the QR codes posted at the Biology Instruments Room to access the laboratories' Google calendar. Furthermore, all students need to accomplish requisition forms (available at the Biology Instruments Room) to avoid any conflicts or delays during scheduling.

Attached below is the procedure for equipment and room use for your reference. Kindly read these guidelines thoroughly as these contain important information to help streamline the process and ensure proper use of the facilities.

🎉 Congratulations to Mr. Adrian Raizen Tolentino for securing 2nd Place in the 2024 PNHRS Research Poster Contest! 🏆

His undergraduate thesis, together with Ms. Princess Rudelle Fajardo and Ms. Abe Gayle Santos, entitled: "Neuroprotective Potential of Lactobacillus plantarum against Acute Bisphenol A (BPA) Toxicity Affecting Dopamine and Serotonin-Regulated Locomotion of Caenorhabditis elegans," earned them a certificate of recognition and a cash prize of 15,000 PhP.

Immense gratitude is extended to Asst. Prof. Pablo V. Serrano from UP Baguio’s Department of Biology for his mentorship. 🧬💯

For those who are enrolled in BIO 200.2, please attend the orientation for important reminders and guidelines on the conduct of the experimental phase of your thesis such as what permits to request for, how to request for room and equipment use, policies on overnight stay, etc. 🔬🧬🧪

Congratulations, Assoc. Prof. Liezel Magtoto, PhD and former faculty members of the department for their new paper entitled: Bulbophyllum bokodense (section Polymeres, Orchidaceae), a new species from Benguet Province, Luzon Island, Philippines.

The newly discovered and characterized species of orchid is named after the Municipality of Bokod, Benguet Province, Philippines, where it was discovered.

This paper was a collaboration among scientists from the Department of Biology, UP Baguio, Texas Christian University, and the Philippine Taxonomic Initiative, Inc.

The Department of Biology, UP Baguio congratulates Asst. Prof. Julienne Erika R. Alviar for earning her Master of Science in Biology (Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and Plant Genetics) from the Ateneo De Manila University. She is also a recipient of the DOST ASTHRDP- (Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program) Scholarship. She obtained her BS Biology degree from the University of the Philippines Baguio.

Her MSc thesis focused on the Morphological and Genetic Variations in Moringa oleifera Lam. (Moringaceae) Accessions from three sites in Luzon, Philippines. 🌿🌱🧬

Currently, Ms. Alviar is an Assistant Professor in the department, teaching courses in Botany and General Biology.

The Department of Biology successfully conducted its 1st Graduate Colloquium and Seminar-Workshop last July 20, 2024. During the colloquium, topics on Microbial Community Assessment, Parasites as Ecological Indicators, Use of AI in tracking or monitoring animal behavior (CSC-funded), Introduction to R, and Spectral Indices and Remote Sensing for Conservation and Restoration Ecology were discussed.

This graduate colloquium and seminar-workshop aims to aid our students in their graduate research.

The secretariat would also like to express gratitude to the Systems Network Office and CS Admin staff for their support to the event.

The Department of Biology, UP Baguio congratulates Ms. Jay-ann A. Tallad for earning her Master of Science in Conservation and Restoration Ecology degree from the University of the Philippines Baguio. Ms. Tallad obtained her BS Biology degree in the same institution.

Her MSc thesis focused on the Bacterial Community Profiling and Analysis of Antibiotic Resistance Genes (ARGs) in Selected Samples from Balili River Benguet, Philippines.

Currently, Ms. Tallad is an Instructor in the department, teaching courses in Microbiology, General Biology, and various general elective courses.
