CARING FOR OUR SENIOR CITIZENS

Reflecting on our efforts for Iloilo City's elderly, I am pleased with the progress made in supporting our senior citizens. The Iloilo City Government, in collaboration with DSWD-6, has allocated P19.7 million to provide a first-quarter social pension of P1,500 to over 13,000 indigent seniors. This pension is vital for those without other income or assistance, helping them meet their basic needs. Additionally, we allocate an extra P1,000 per year to 7,000 seniors from our local funds.

Let's continue our collaborative efforts to enhance the well-being of our elderly community and ensure that they receive the care and respect they rightfully deserve.

FREE MOVIES FOR SENIORS!!

In Celebration of the 87th ILOILO CHARTER DAY, the City of Iloilo in partnership with our generous malls, SM City Iloilo, Robinsons World & Festive Walk, is re-launching the FREE MOVIES for the Senior Citizens of Iloilo City.

Movie Booklets to be released starting Aug. 14, 2024 at the Office for Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) – Iloilo City Hall & Iloilo City Payment Center – SM City Iloilo.

Guidelines for the Free Movie:
1. Booklet should be claimed personally upon presentation of the Senior Citizen ID. Representatives are not allowed.
2. FREE ADMISSION to ALL ILOILO CITY Based Cinemas every Tuesday only provided these do not fall on a regular or special holiday. Valid for one (1) movie per senior citizen per day.
3. NOT VALID during special screenings, sneak previews, advance screenings and movie benefit.
4. NOT VALID during the first week of screening of BLOCKBUSTER MOVIES.
5. Valid for STANDARD CINEMAS only.
6. Present your Iloilo City Senior Citizen Identification Card together with the booklet upon availment.
7. PHOTOCOPIES of the Admission Booklet will not be honored.

POST-RETIREMENT BLISS: “Project Uswag para sa mga Katigulangan”

Demonstrating commitment to improving the lives of every Ilonggo regardless of age group, Iloilo City is embarking on a project tailored to the needs and overall welfare of the elderly.

“Project Uswag para sa mga Katigulangan,” or PUSK, is a livelihood project aimed at teaching senior citizens arts and crafts hobby skills for sustainable income-generating activities. This also seeks to maximize the utility of the city’s Senior Citizens Centers and enliven the place.

“We want them [senior citizens] to come together when they have nothing to do. Some members of their family go to school or work, so they get bored; they could easily become depressed. But if we have this activity, they will look forward to productively spending time with their fellow senior citizens,” Special Assistant to the Mayor, Maria Mathilde Treñas, said.

She added that the city government believes these kinds of programs could give senior citizens a sense of purpose even after they retire from the workforce.

Not only are they equipped with skills that could provide them financial benefits but also help maintain their cognitive function, have some fruitful pastime, mingle with others for social and emotional support, maintain mobility with less strenuous activities, and generally have something to look forward to enhancing their overall well-being.

PUSK is set to launch in time with the celebration of the 87th Charter Day of Iloilo City, and full implementation is targeted in September.

The livelihood program for the Ilonggo elderly will be piloted in Barangay PHHC Block 22, Mandurriao, and Barangay Sta. Filomena, Arevalo. Senior citizens from Mandurriao will learn about rug weaving and potholder making, while those from Arevalo will make box file holders or desk organizers out of recycled materials.

One representative per barangay will undergo a four-day training to be carried out by the Technical Institute of Iloilo City.

Program funds will be sourced through the Office of the Senior Citizens Affair (OSCA).
PUSK is also in partnership with the Federation of Senior Citizens Associations of the Philippines—Iloilo City Chapter and the City Social Welfare and Development Office.

Each district will have its signature product, which will be displayed in the OSCA office at City Hall and in exhibits whenever the city has events. Barangays will be given working kits for everyone to use within the premises of Senior Citizens Centers only.

“The sale of their products will provide their association with a source of income. On our part in the city government, we will provide personnel who will look after the Senior Citizens Center,” Treñas added. (Pearl Socias/City PIO)

Did You Know?

The Amended Ilonggo Centenarian Ordinance, Regulation Ordinance No. 2021-020 was approved by the Sangguniang Panglungsod (SP) on December 5, 2019, it was amended from Regulation Ordinance 2017-053 that provides additional benefits and privileges to residents of Iloilo City who reach 80, 90 & 100 years old.

Section 6 & 9 state that upon reaching the age of 80 the senior citizen is entitled to receive Php 10,000; upon reaching 90 years old, will be receiving Php 20,000 and for 100 years old will be receiving Php 50,000.

The author of said ordinance is Councilor Irene Ong.

ILOILO CITY’S RISE-A-FARM PROGRAM

Iloilo City's RISE-A-FARM program has been distinguished as one of the finalists for the esteemed Galing Pook-Walang Gutom Award. This honor was bestowed during a short ceremony that followed the final national presentations by all 17 finalists. DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian presented certificates to all the awardees. The announcement of the top 10 winners is scheduled for tomorrow, June 26, 2024.

CITY ORDINANCE EXEMPTS SHS SCHOLAR ACHIEVERS FROM ENTRANCE EXAMS

Iloilo City Government’s scholars who will graduate senior high school as valedictorian or salutatorian or any of its equivalents are exempted from taking entrance examinations for college.

This was formalized after the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP), during June 5 regular session, approved the amendment on Section 4 of Regulation Ordinance No. 2020-106 entitled “An ordinance creating the Educational Financial Assistance Program for College Students in Iloilo City".

Section 4 of the ordinance provides the qualification for program scholars.
The amended portion says that “the scholar must have obtained a final equivalent rating of eighty percent (80%) or above in his/her scores in the competitive examination to be conducted by the Commission (on Higher Education)...”

However, it further stipulates that “if the scholar is duly certified as a valedictorian or salutatorian or any of its equivalents of a senior high school in Iloilo City, he or she be exempt from taking the competitive examination or complying with the final equivalent rating requirement.”

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas thanked the members of the City Council who voted for the amendment of said Scholarship Ordinance.
