CARMMA on the recent Supreme Court decision on the Marcoses’ ill-gotten wealth

The Campaign Against the Return of the Marcoses and Martial Law (CARMMA) welcomes the Supreme Court decision declaring a Marcos family's property in Paoay, Ilocos Norte as ill-gotten wealth.

This decision is significant because this would be, as far as we know, the first ruling on Marcos’ illegal wealth under the presidency of the son, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who has repeatedly denied that his family amassed millions worth of wealth during the Marcos Sr. dictatorship.

Based on the SC decision, the Marcoses' claim on a public land as their own, while seated in Malacanang, is one more proof of how the Marcoses used their power to expand their wealth .

As the decision also comes out just a few weeks before we commemorate the declaration of martial law by the Marcos regime on September 21, 1972 - - an event that enabled the Marcoses to stay in power for 14 years, and plunder the nation’s wealth - - we are reminded that the fight for justice and accountability, and the struggle against historical distortion and impunity is far from over.

We fervently hope that more Marcos ill-gotten wealth be recovered, and more lies and disinformation on the so-called Marcos’ golden years debunked.

At the same time, we condemn the continuing violation of human rights including disappearances, bombing of rural communities, the censorship of films on the basis of its political stand, among others.

As in the past years, CARMMA remains firm in its demand for an end to impunity and for justice.

JUST IN: Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas admits that he is powerless to clear the name of former city mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog regarding his alleged links to illegal drugs during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

“How can I do anything at all when I am not close to the powers that be (Duterte), unlike Cong. Jamjam, who was very close to them,” he said.

Treñas was the lone district representative of Iloilo City when Duterte alleged that Mabilog had links to the illegal drug trade in 2016.

Meanwhile, lone district Rep. Julienne “Jamjam” Baronda served as the chief political officer for Senator JV Ejercito at that time.

Treñas said Baronda has close ties with the Duterte family and his allies, which could enable her to help Mabilog.

In Celebration of the 87th ILOILO CHARTER DAY, the City of Iloilo in partnership with our generous malls, SM City Iloilo, Robinsons World & Festive Walk, is re-launching the FREE MOVIES for the Senior Citizens of Iloilo City.

Movie Booklets to be released starting Aug. 14, 2024 at the Office for Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) – Iloilo City Hall & Iloilo City Payment Center – SM City Iloilo.

Guidelines for the Free Movie:
1. Booklet should be claimed personally upon presentation of the Senior Citizen ID. Representatives are not allowed.
2. FREE ADMISSION to ALL ILOILO CITY Based Cinemas every Tuesday only provided these do not fall on a regular or special holiday. Valid for one (1) movie per senior citizen per day.
3. NOT VALID during special screenings, sneak previews, advance screenings and movie benefit.
4. NOT VALID during the first week of screening of BLOCKBUSTER MOVIES.
5. Valid for STANDARD CINEMAS only.
6. Present your Iloilo City Senior Citizen Identification Card together with the booklet upon availment.
7. PHOTOCOPIES of the Admission Booklet will not be honored.

BREAKING: Supreme Court upholds the franchise expansion of MORE Electric and Power Corp. in Iloilo Province as it declares that electric cooperatives do not have a constitutional right to an exclusive franchise within their coverage areas.

In a decision released on Thursday, the Supreme Court En Banc dismissed the petition of Iloilo Electric Cooperative, Inc. I, II, and III (ILECOs) challenging the validity of Republic Act No. (RA) 11918. The law expanded the franchise of another electricity provider, MORE Electric and Power Corporation (MORE), to areas within ILECOs’ franchise.

In dismissing the petition, the Court ruled that Section 11, Article XII of the Constitution prohibits exclusive franchises.

“A franchise, as a privilege granted by the state, is not the exclusive private property of the franchisee. Thus, it must yield to serve the common good, as determined by Congress,” the high court said.

“Without competition, ILECOs can easily dictate the price of electricity. Allowing the entry of another player thus benefits consumers, who no longer have to wait until ILECOs’ franchises expire in 2029, 2039, and 2053. This is in accordance with the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA), which encourages competition in the electricity industry,” the Supreme Court added.
