About the Speaker
Dr Xueyi D**g is a postdoctoral research officer in Chen lab in ACRF Cancer Biology and Stem Cells division, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI). She completed her PhD at WEHI in 2023 under the supervision of Prof. Matthew Ritchie, Dr. Charity Law, and Prof. Gordon Smyth. Her current research primarily involves the analysis of spatial transcriptomics data and the investigation of alternative splicing using RNA-seq.

The Lasallian Social Enterprise for Economic Development (LSEED) Center invites the faculty members, staff, and students (undergraduate and graduate) of the College of Computer Studies (CCS) to the Introduction to LSEED Center’s SIER Program on May 8, 2024 (2:00-3:30 pm) via Zoom.
This 1.5-hour activity aims to introduce the constituents of the college to LSEED Center’s Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Research (SIER) Program - encouraging them to undertake research in social entrepreneurship (SE) with angles on social innovation, science and technology, engineering, and other areas of expertise of the De La Salle University (DLSU) and contribute to local and national development by influencing policies and developing programs through SE-related research.

DLSU maintains standing in 2024 THE Asia University Rankings

De La Salle University is among the leading HEIs in the region in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings, maintaining its standing in the 501-600 bracket.

The rankings use the research-intensive indicators as THE’s World University Rankings, but are recalibrated to reflect the priorities of the Asian institutions. About the webinar:
The increasing complexity and interdependencies of the systems that comprise a city’s function and drive its evolution also increase its vulnerability to “shocks”. These have significant implications not only on urban residents’ wellbeing and resilience but also in our pursuit for a more sustainable future. An interdisciplinary framework and approach to urban sustainability and resilience research based on the performance concept (around multiple or n-bottom-lines, nBL) and systems science applied at different scales is presented to better understand and support a whole-society approach to addressing these challenges. These are illustrated through a brief overview of a diverse range of research on climate change mitigation and adaptation as they relate to the built environment, energy systems transitions, freight transport and logistics and disaster and community resilience, including the role of digital and information technologies and stakeholder decision-making based on anthro-complexity. Some of the most significant research challenges are identified.

About the Speaker:
Prof Greg Foliente is a 2023-24 Balik Scientist Program (BSP) Awardee and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the De La Salle University, hosted by the Advanced Research Institute on Informatics, Computing and Networking (AdRIC) in collaboration with the Enrique Razon Logistics Institute (ERLI). He is currently Professor of Infrastructure and Urban Systems in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Melbourne, and President and Board Chair for the non-profit International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment (iiSBE). A scholar of global standing, he is a recipient of the prestigious James Croes Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), amongst other awards, and listed in Stanford University’s world ranking of top 2% scientists based on his published work in Scopus – and, in the fields of Civil Engineering and Building and Construction, he is in the top 1% amongst researchers worldwide. Greg has previously worked at the University of California in Berkeley and the Australian national science agency, the CSIRO, and has been a visiting professor in leading universities in Europe and Asia. He received his PhD and 2 MSc degrees at Virginia Tech in the US, and executive leadership and management training at the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the MIT Sloan Executive Education. Everyone is invited to listen to Prof. Toru Ishida, Professor Emeritus from Kyoto University, and an IEEE Fellow. He led IEICE as President from 2021-2022 and was with the Science Council of Japan from 2011-2017. He is currently serving as Distinguished Visiting Professor of Hong Kong Baptist University.

In his talk, Prof. Ishida will review previous research on agents (autonomous software in virtual space) and avatars (incarnations in virtual space that move under human control). He will also discuss what kind of research activities on agents and avatars are desirable for the future of the Metaverse.
