Congratulations to our student Ryella Sison and the team for winning the Best Presentation award in the ASEAN University Network Institut Teknologi Bandung (AUN-ITB) Summer Camp 2024 with the theme โ€œIntegrated Sustainability for Thriving Community

The ASEAN University Network (AUN) Summer Camp (AISC 2024), organized by Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) in Indonesia, is a two-week offline program focused on innovation and sustainability. Participants engaged in site visits and seminars on various topics related to natural resource management, engineering processes, and renewable energy, culminating in a group project to develop a Business Model Canvas (BMC). The program's theme emphasizes integrating ASEAN's energy and mineral resources to foster collaboration and create sustainable solutions for common regional challenges.

The Best Presentation award was given to Groups 1&2 led by Ryella Sison as they introduced Project AREX, a three-phase initiative on the development and distribution of Autonomous Resource Explorers in pursuit of redefining the capabilities of the asteroid mining industry.

We are proud of you!

[PUBLICATION SPOTLIGHT] The Future of Clean Energy with Torrefaction

As COโ‚‚ levels continue to rise above the suggested global limits, there is a greater need to move away from fossil fuels. Currently, bioenergy is the largest renewable energy source in the world. It can be obtained by converting biomassโ€“organic matter from plants and animalsโ€“to biofuel. Several conversion technologies have been developed to enhance the biofuel output, though one technique, torrefaction, has shown particular promise due to its ability to turn biomass into coal-like fuel with low global warming potential.

To further the advancement of torrefaction, an international group of researchers published a study in 2021 providing a comprehensive review of biomass torrefaction technologies, including its progress, environmental impact, and future direction. DLSU University Fellow Dr. Alvin B. Culaba and Research Fellow Dr. Aristotle T. Ubando are among the co-authors of the Q1 journal published study, which has 482 citations to date.

The exhaustive study touches upon numerous recommendations for the use of torrefaction, such as integrating it with other treatment processes like gasification and pyrolysis to increase efficiency and feasibility. It highlights the environmental impact, such as how growing biomass can act as a carbon capture and how torrefaction, in particular, has lower carbon emissions than other conversion methods. It recognizes the challenges of the technology, such as the need to assess the health and environmental impact of some heavy metal contaminants used in certain scenarios.
