LIGHTING THE PATH TOWARDS RENEWED VISION: MMMHMC’S TRAILBLAZING CORNEA DONOR LEAVES A LASTING LEGACY OF SIGHT

With the establishment of the Cornea Retrieval Unit earlier this year, the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center took a moment last Thursday, June 23, to recognize the first ever cornea donor who has become a beacon of hope leaving behind a profound legacy of sight.

Through the Department of Ophthalmology with the Department Chair, Dr. Sofia Cecilia Sipin, and the Project Head of the Cornea Retrieval Unit, Dr. Maria Fe Navarette, together with their retrieval team, the eye tissue was successfully recovered and sent to the Eye Bank Foundation of the Philippines.

A remarkable act of compassion, the generosity and bravery of the first cornea donor, a resident of Batac City, has left an indelible mark on MMMHMC and the lives he has touched. His legacy will forever be remembered as a symbol of empathy highlighting the power of organ donation to transform lives.

As a gesture of respect, employees of MMMHMC led by Dr. Modesty Leaño, Head of the Department of Pathology and Laboratories and the Officer-in-Charge of the day, had the Walk of Honor to commemorate the brave soul of a patient whose organs are donated - the first for cornea donors in the region.

The MMMHMC, headed by the Medical Center Chief Dr. Maria Lourdes K. Otayza, also extended their heartfelt appreciation to the donor's family who during their time of grief made the courageous decision to honor their loved one's wish and give the gift of sight to individuals who once faced visual impairment. Their unwavering support and strength are a testament to the love and compassion that resides within their hearts.

As we move forward, let us continue to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation and honor the legacy of the first ever cornea donor at MMMHMC. This inspiring act reminds us of the incredible impact we can make on the lives of others through the simple act of giving. Together, we can create a world where more individuals receive the precious gift of sight and a renewed hope for the future.

The Eye Bank Foundation

“Corneal blindness is one of the top four causes of blindness in the world. The situation in the Philippines is no different. This form of blindness may be caused by infections, accidents, congenital defects, surgical trauma, and many others. It may affect people of all ages from all walks of life.

Since 1995 the EBFP, through its medical eye bank known as the Santa Lucia International Eye Bank of Manila (SLIEB), has brought hope and renewed life to thousands of blind individuals through corneal transplants. Collective known simply as the Eye Bank, the EBFP/SLIEB continues to serve the nation and the world, not only by making the highest quality transplantable eye tissue available and accessible, but also through research, training, and public educational campaigns about blindness, its prevention and cure.

You too can be part of this vital work, change lives and literally become a hero for others simply by deciding to sign a donor card pledging your eyes or corneas after death; and by encouraging friends and family members to do the same. Should you have any questions or should you wish to help us in other ways, do please contact the Eye Bank through our numbers.

We hope you make the decision to share the gift of sight. This simple yet profoundly noble act not only leaves a legacy for you and your loved ones; it literally enables you to be part of a miracle for someone blind”.
