FACTS ABOUT GLAUCOMA

Glaucoma is a disease that usually occurs when fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. The extra fluid increases the pressure in your eye, damaging the optic nerve. There are two major types. Open-angle glaucoma, the most common, happens gradually. It is painless and causes no vision changes at first. As the disease progresses, blind spots develop in your peripheral vision. Angle-closure glaucoma is a true emergency requiring immediate medical attention to prevent blindness. Early symptoms include blurred vision, halos, mild headaches or eye pain.

WAYS TO PREVENT AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD)

Although there's no surefire way to prevent AMD, there are things you can do to delay its onset or reduce its severity. Research suggests that certain nutrients help prevent macular degeneration. Eat a diet rich in fresh fruits and dark-green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, collard greens, and kale. Dark-green leafy vegetables are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, which are key for eye health.

FACTS ABOUT AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD)

AMD occurs when a part of the retina called the macula is damaged. It is a leading cause of vision loss in people 50 years or older. AMD affects the middle part of your vision, in one or both eyes. Symptoms include dark, blurry areas in your central vision; seeing straight lines as wavy or crooked; objects looking smaller than normal; and colors seeming faded.

WHAT IS THE BEST TREATMENT FOR CONJUNCTIVITIS?

Treatment depends on the type of sore eyes you have. There is no specific treatment for viral conjunctivitis, as your immune system will fight the virus on its own. You may place a cool, wet washcloth over your eyes to ease the discomfort. Your ophthalmologist may prescribe antibiotic eye drops for bacterial conjunctivitis. For allergic conjunctivitis, your ophthalmologist may recommend certain eye drops or ointment.

VISION PROBLEMS WITH CATARACTS

Cataracts, a prevalent eye condition, arise when the natural lens of the eyes becomes clouded, leading to a range of vision problems. This cloudiness manifests as blurriness or haziness, akin to peering through a foggy or dusty car windshield. The gradual onset of cataracts can compromise one's ability to perceive details clearly, affecting daily activities such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE DIABETIC RETINOPATHY?

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects your eye. High blood sugar levels can result in the blockage of tiny blood vessels that supply nourishment to the retina of your eye.

In its early stages, diabetic retinopathy often has no symptoms. Symptoms develop when the condition gets worse. These include seeing more and more floaters (spots in your vision), having blurred vision, having vision that changes sometimes from blurry to clear, having poor night vision, having blank or dark areas in your field of vision, noticing colors appear faded or washed out, and losing vision.

REDUCE EYESTRAIN DURING END-OF-YEAR CELEBRATIONS

When watching television, keep the room softly lit. Limit screen time, especially for children. Rest your eyes every 20 minutes and shift your focus to an object that's about 20 feet away. Blink often to moisten and refresh your eyes. Nonprescription artificial tears can help prevent and relieve dry eyes. Use them even when your eyes feel fine to keep them well lubricated and prevent a recurrence of symptoms.

WHAT IS RETINOBLASTOMA?

Retinoblastoma is the most common form of cancer affecting the eye in children. It begins in the retina, but can spread to other areas of the body such as the brain and spine. Retinoblastoma occurs when nerve cells in the retina develop genetic mutations. This causes the cells to multiply uncontrollably and form a tumor in one or both eyes. Retinoblastoma can sometimes occur in adults.
