Building on the conceptual foundation laid by “Dig Where You Stand - From Coast to Coast,” the third iteration of this exhibition series, hosted at HANGAR in Lisbon, Portugal, forges a new path into geographical and thematic territories. Venturing beyond the African continent for the first time, this exhibition explores the complex interplay of labor, exploitation, and the global movement of peoples and ideas that shape our collective rhythm and composition.
Portugal, with its pivotal role in the transatlantic slave trade, serves as a poignant backdrop for an exploration that seeks not only to confront but also to heal and reimagine. The guiding theme for this iteration, “Memories of Discord,” aims to unravel the discordant lullabies of history, acknowledging the scars of exploitation while also sowing the seeds for a future where those same narratives give rise to new possibilities for understanding and engagement.
Featuring the works of Ibrahim Mahama, Barthélémy Toguo, and Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise & Renzo Martens, this exhibition presents a multidimensional chorus that spans continents and epochs. It re-composes the notes of a shared history that, while marked by exploitation and suffering, also embodies the resilience and creativity of the human spirit.

Artist in residency | KAROLE BIRON
Karole Biron é uma artista multidisciplinar que vive na cidade de Quebec, Canadá. Está interessada na dinâmica entre o corpo, o seu movimento, a sua relação com o espaço e os estados de consciência que daí resultam. A sua pesquisa é realizada, entre outras coisas, através de instalação, escultura, fotografia e do uso de luz e som.
As suas produções foram exibidas em exposições no Quebec e no estrangeiro (Bulgária, México, Brasil, França, Bélgica) e durante residências artísticas (Banff, Bélgica, Grécia e Espanha). Ela deu conferências e workshops no Quebec, na Noruega e em Portugal, e participou em numerosos júris e críticas de workshops tanto em artes como em arquitetura. Tem também no seu currículo mais de uma dezena de obras de arte pública integradas na arquitetura e no ambiente.
O seu trabalho artístico é influenciado em diferentes níveis pela sua expertise científica em patologia. Além disso, foi diretora de publicação do livro Segments and Specimens, reflexões sobre fotografia e medicina, publicado pelas Éditions J’ai VU. Karole Biron estudou Artes Visuais e Arquitetura.

Nascido e criado em Roma (22 anos), brinco e experimento com câmaras, câmaras de vídeo, scanners e todas as ferramentas visuais que tenho ao meu dispor, documentando e retratando a vida quotidiana através do detalhe.
Brincar é um aspeto fundamental do meu processo artístico, pois permite-me redescobrir e observar as coisas como se fosse pela primeira vez. Atualmente, estou a experimentar com diversos media em fotografia e vídeo, procurando sempre o limite entre o analógico e o digital.

Barbara Claus é uma artista visual de renome, baseada em Montreal, com uma carreira extensa e impressionante. Ao longo dos anos, apresentou o seu trabalho em mais de 30 exposições individuais no Canadá, Europa, México, Argentina, e em outros locais, além de ter participado em 30 exposições coletivas. O seu talento e dedicação valeram-lhe residências prestigiadas, incluindo o renomado Le Studio du Québec em Tóquio em 2015 e em Roma em 2022, ambas concedidas pelo Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ).
Ao longo da sua carreira, Barbara esteve envolvida em numerosas residências artísticas de longa duração, não só no Canadá, mas também internacionalmente, incluindo no México e na Argentina. A sua jornada criativa também a levou aos Estados Unidos, onde foi convidada pela Helene Wurlitzer Foundation em Taos, Novo México. Além disso, foi selecionada pela Swatch Foundation para passar seis meses a criar em Xangai.
As contribuições artísticas de Barbara Claus foram reconhecidas através de múltiplas bolsas de pesquisa tanto do CALQ como do Conselho das Artes do Canadá. O seu trabalho vai além das exposições, tendo também criado várias obras de arte pública permanente, solidificando ainda mais o seu impacto no mundo da arte.

Artist in residency | DALTON PAULA
Dalton Paula nasceu em 1982 em Brasília-DF e mora e trabalha em Goiânia, é bacharel em Artes Visuais e discute o corpo silenciado no meio urbano. Em 2021 participou da exposição “Enciclopédia Negra”, na Pinacoteca de São Paulo; em 2020 fez sua primeira exposição individual “Dalton Paula: um sequestrador de Almas”, em Nova York, na Alexander and Bonin Gallery. No ano de 2019 foi um dos cinco premiados da 7ª edição do Prêmio CNI SESI SENAI Marcantonio Vilaça para as Artes Plásticas; e também expôs no “36º Panorama da Arte Brasileira: Sertão”, no Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo -MAM. Em 2018 foi selecionado para a Trienal “Songs for Sabotage” do New Museum em Nova York/EUA. Também integrou a 11ª Bienal de Artes Visuais do Mercosul – “O Triângulo Atlântico”, em Porto Alegre-RS; e teve trabalhos na exposição “Histórias Afro-Atlânticas” (MASP e Instituto Tomie Ohtake). Em 2017 participou da exposição “The Atlantic Triangle” (Instituto Goethe em Lagos/Nigéria) e no ano de 2016 foi um dos artistas convidados para a 32a Bienal de São Paulo.
Apresentamos a equipa artística da residência “Affective Ecologies”, composta pela diretora artística Monica de Miranda () e as curadoras Cindy Sissokho () e Paula Nascimento ().
A residência decorrerá no Hangar - Centro de Investigação Artística, em Lisboa, de 1 a 15 de outubro.

We present the artistic team for the ‘Affective Ecologies’ residency, made up of artistic director Monica de Miranda () and curators Cindy Sissokho () and Paula Nascimento ().

Estamos empolgados em apresentar os quatro artistas visuais selecionados para participar na residência artística a realizar-se de 01/10 a 15/10, no Hangar - Centro de Investigação Artística, em Lisboa. Cada artista traz uma perspectiva única para explorar o pensamento de Amílcar Cabral.
Carla Rebelo (), natural de São Tomé e Príncipe, é uma artista visual autodidata que reside em Barcelona, onde investiga os processos de construção identitária por meio de fotografia, arquivos, vídeo e texto. Para a artista e curadora moçambicana Carina Ubisse Capitine (), o corpo, a natureza e a sensualidade são elementos centrais na expressão de sua imaginação, com a arte serve como ferramenta poderosa para amplificar as vivências de comunidades marginalizadas.
Wyssolela Moreira (), que divide seu tempo entre Luanda (Angola) e Toronto (Canadá), é uma artista multidisciplinar e diretora de arte. O seu trabalho abrange colagem mixed-media, escrita, fotografia, instalação, têxteis, videoarte e performance, abordando as complexidades de um “Eu” moldado pela normatividade neocolonial. Já o cabo-verdiano Yuran Henrique () explora materiais como tecidos, aço e pigmentos em suas criações, incentivando reflexões sobre perceção, representação e as formas hegemônicas de conhecimento.

O Hangar - Centro de Investigação Artística e a Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian têm o prazer de anunciar os resultados da Open call do programa “Affective Ecologies - Uma Residência Artística sobre a relevância atual do pensamento de Amílcar Cabral”.
Num ano em que se celebra os 50 anos do 25 de Abril, torna-se fundamental destacar as lutas anticoloniais que contribuíram para o fim da ditadura em Portugal. Esta residência convida os artistas a explorarem as ideias de Amílcar Cabral que assentam na interligação da regeneração ecológica, social e política.

Dig Where You Stand, is a series of travelling exhibitions from coast to coast offering a radical shift by introducing a new methodology of engaging with capital both in the art world and the broader economy on the African continent. Central themes of all exhibits are decolonization, restitution, and repatriation. The third Edition of Dig Where You Stand takes place in Lisbon, Portugal in collaboration with HANGAR. The other edition happened at Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA) and Palais de Lomé, Togo.

Ibrahim Mahama (b. 1987, Tamale, Ghana) is a contemporary artist who splits his time between Accra and Tamale. He graduated in 2013 with a degree in painting and sculpture from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi. Mahama is known for using repurposed urban materials like wood, jute sacks, and old doors to explore themes of globalization, migration, and trade. His work often focuses on how these materials reflect crises and the impacts of global capitalism.
Textiles, especially jute sacks originally used for transporting cocoa beans in Ghana, are central to his art. These materials, bearing marks of their usage, are sewn into large tapestries that Mahama uses to cover buildings, making statements about consumer society. Notably, his installation Out of Bounds (2015) at the Venice Biennale covered the walls of the Troncone in the Arsenale.
Mahama frequently collaborates with local artisans, architects, and craftsmen in his projects, such as the Purple Hibiscus (2023-2024) commission at London’s Barbican Centre. He sometimes includes his collaborators in his work, as seen in his photographs of workers’ tattooed arms.
In addition to textiles, Mahama uses objects like rusty sewing machines and old train seats, which hold historical significance, especially in relation to Ghana’s post-colonial history. By bringing these materials into the art world, he elevates their value beyond their original purpose.
Beyond his art, Mahama has made significant contributions to art education in Ghana. He founded the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA) in Tamale in 2019, followed by the Red Clay studio complex in 2020, and in 2021 opened Nkrumah Volini, a renovated silo, further expanding his educational initiatives in northern Ghana.

CATPC
Congolese Plantation Workers Art Leage (CATPC, acronym of the French ‘Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise’), is a cooperative of plantation workers based in Lusanga, Democratic Republic of Congo. Founded in 2014 with environmental activist René Ngongo, its members make sculptures in river clay, which are reproduced in products from the plantation: palm fat, cocoa, sugar. In 2017, they opened an OMA-designed White Cube on a former Unilever plantation and their solo show at SculptureCenter was named ‘the most challenging show of the year’ by the New York Times. In 2022 and as one of the first global instances of digital restitution, they launched a collection of NFTs that reclaim a long-lost sculpture. With the proceeds of their art, CATPC buys back depleted plantation land where they develop an inclusive, worker-owned Post-Plantation, where regenerative agriculture provides local food security, brings back biodiversity and mitigates climate change. Most recently, CATPC represented the Netherlands at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia with their entry titled “The International Celebration of Blasphemy and the Sacred.”

Um livro de memórias sobre o regresso de uma mãe e uma filha a Cabo Verde revela os legados da libertação nacional, uma história de memória e migração e a paisagem psíquica e física que o colonialismo criou.
Ragás é uma palavra crioula cabo-verdiana que designa o espaço criado entre a cintura e os joelhos quando se está sentado: o colo. Aqui, é um lugar para encontrar carinho, um lugar para ser abraçado, protegido e cuidado, um lugar para a reconexão e o regresso às memórias que os outros carregam para si quando a migração significa tanto deixar como ser deixado para trás.

A memoir about the return of a mother and daughter to Cape Verde reveals the legacies of national liberation, a story of memory and migration and the psychic and physical landscape that colonialism created.
Ragás is a Cape Verdean Creole word for the space created between the waist and the knees when sitting: the lap. Here, it’s a place to find affection, a place to be hugged, protected and cared for, a place to reconnect and return to the memories that others carry for you when migration means both leaving and being left behind.

Hara Shin lives and works in Berlin. Her videos and multimedia installations, in which she radically questions our identities in relation to corporeality and the surrounding landscape, have been exhibited internationally, including at Galerie Weisser Elefant in Berlin, Germany(2023), DMZ International Documentary Film Festival in Goyang, South Korea(2023), TRAFO Center for Contemporary Art in Szczecin, Poland(2022), Drugo More in Rijeka, Croatia(2022), and Art Center Nabi in Seoul, South Korea (2021).

CAM, LA COOPERATIVE D’IMMIGRATION is a work in progress, a project that is already an event between north and south. __in its raw reality CAM is an archive that grows over time, it can be seen as an installation, a performance, a work in progress [work in progress, as the Anglophones call it] art of behaviour, ARTE PRECEITO / ARTE DE PRECEITO [as PNAC/ LTDA is currently saying] an event . — the work is materialised with boxes-folders of files, in short the work is a workshop that generates other works, _ in this way it comes close to the BUREAU-X DE LANGUE [ another project carried out by the artist, about learning the language of others and teaching them his own], a process of uninterrupted infinitude and at the same time drifting —— as a process, the most important thing is that the ‘WELCOME’ series is already underway, a collection of posters and pamphlets that prophesise a good welcome are installed in the exhibition space and can be taken by the public, who leave their money in a specific container to reproduce the same prints.

Artist in residency | SIEGLINDE WITTWER
Sieglinde Wittwer is a painter, sculptor and etcher. She studied art history at the University of Zurich and graduated as a teacher of visual design at the Zurich Art Academy. In her work, Sieglinde Wittwer is not only concerned with visual research, but is also interested in resonance: what do such places trigger in people? How do places and people interact? And how can these experiences be made visible through artistic practice? With such questions in her luggage, Sieglinde Wittwer has repeatedly set out to explore special resonance spaces: the decaying Detroit, the Parisian banlieues, the coastal areas of Senegal. The result is picture cycles and sculptures that question her own state of mind as well as that of the inhabitants of those peripheral areas and outskirts.

Artist in residency | OKE FIJAL
Oke Fijal is a conceptual and multi-media artist based in Vienna. Their recent works are research based and aim to unmask social phenomena like gender as historical naturalized fictions and products of power structures. Oke works in divers media – from video and 3D-modelling to casting and metal work. For Oke collectivity is fundamental for their practice. They are involved in different artistic, curatorial and activist collective arrangements. Oke has an academic background in social science and diversity studies. Currently they are part of the studio for post conceptual art practices at the academy of fine arts Vienna.

Artist in residency | DIANA GUERRA
Diana Guerra is a Peruvian American lens-based artist and educator currently based in New York. Her work revolves around themes of memory, belonging, and identity (re)construction, from the perspective of a woman of color within the Latine diaspora in New York City. Guerra holds an MFA in Digital and Interdisciplinary Art Practice from the City College of New York and a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. Guerra’s early training in photography was at Parsons School of Design as part of the MFA Photography program. Guerra is a 2024 AIM Bronx Museum Fellow and 2022 En Foco Photography Fellow. Her work has been featured at The Museum of the City of New York, Photoville, Mana Contemporary, The School of Visual Arts, among others. She is currently an Adjunct Professor at The City College of New York.

Artist in residency | RANTI BAM
British-Nigerian artist Ranti Bam' research into her MA thesis (A dialogue between the known and the experienced) was where she discovered a love for clay as an extraordinary material. Having been raised across two continents, clay has become a way for her to give cohesive form to her multiplicities and thereby fully inhabit the material and spiritual culture of both worlds. A ferocious reader, Bam is inspired by a passion of etymology and metaphors. The multiple dyads of the symbolic vessel continues to be of significance. Fusing painting, sculpture and performance, Bam explores the literal and the metaphorical; inside and outside, abstraction and figuration, light and the dark, and spirit and form.
Since then, she has exhibited in various experimental venues in the UK, New York, Lagos and Paris to name a few and she has completed residencies at Moly Sabata (Sablons), Cite Internationale des Arts (Paris) and the European Ceramic Work Centre (Netherlands). Bam’s works are housed in collections including The Brooklyn Museum and The V&A. Bam has been selected for the Liverpool Biennial 2023.
