We were equally delighted to welcome Minister of State Gan Siow Huang 颜晓芳 to ITE College East. She had a meaningful discussion with our students about the future and how our youths are empowered to create opportunities for themselves and others.

Minister Gan highlighted the importance of building character and resilience to face life's challenges and encouraged our students to be curious and confident in seizing the opportunities ahead. Thank you, Minister Gan, for your inspiring visit and valuable advice!

We were honoured to host Dr Maliki Osman, Second Minister for Education, at ITE College Central this week. His insightful discussion on the interdependent self and the unique strengths within our Asian identity was truly inspiring. He encouraged our students to plan ahead, set personal goals, and navigate their paths with confidence.

Dr Maliki also addressed the rising cost of living and emphasised the importance of continuous learning and skill development to thrive in our ever-changing world. Thank you for your invaluable insights and for inspiring our future trailblazers!

Today at the STL-SCEU Learning Festival 2024, witnessed by the Guest-of-Honour, Mr Desmond Tan, Senior Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, ITE signed an MOU with ST Logistics to offer internships and Work-Study Diploma opportunities for Higher Nitec students, aiming to strengthen Singapore's supply chain workforce. 🌐📈

We are thrilled to empower ITE students and drive innovation, excellence, and growth in Singapore's logistics and ICT landscape. The ITE Work-Study Diploma provides hands-on learning and employment opportunities, enhancing ITE staff capabilities through industry collaborations. Graduates can pursue a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Infrastructure and Systems Engineering with SIT, boosting their skills and employability. 🚀🌟

🤾‍♂️Fun fact: More than 20 per cent of the national senior and Under-19 tchoukball players are from ITE!🤾 A new MOU signed between ITE and the Tchoukball Association of Singapore on 13 July 2024 will see sports facilities at the three ITE colleges added to the association's current training bases. The MOU was witnessed by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong. Centres of Excellence will be established at ITE campuses to provide coaching, organise tournaments and outreach programmes, and groom future tchoukball stars!✨

Blessing Bali: ITE and our GEN partners from Kirkwood Community College and Southern Alberta Institute of Technology - SAIT embarked on a community service trip to Bali, which was made possible by the strong support by Diversey! 🌍🧼 SOAP CYCLE: A FRESH SPIN ON USED SOAP BARS FOR A GREENER GLOBE 🧼🌍

Did you know that the disposal of used soap bars in hotels worldwide poses significant environmental challenges? Eco-warriors from ITE College East are here to tackle that! 💚✨

This team is on a mission to recycle used soap bars through sustainable waste management. Thanks to a portable cold-press machine designed by the brilliant minds at ITE College East, the team has developed a multi-step recycling process that involves removing the outer used layers of the soap, shredding the remaining soap into small pieces, and compressing these pieces into molds to create new, larger soap bars.

Team Leader, Jolene Chua, shared: “This simple yet effective method not only promotes sustainability but also offers potential employment opportunities for individuals in poor rural areas.” 🌱🧽

This and more interesting projects were presented at the ongoing VTC-ITE International Student Seminar 2024 in Hong Kong!

Taking care of our mental health at every stage of life is essential, as it influences how we handle stress, make healthy decisions, and relate to others.

MINDSCAPES: THE JOURNEY WITHIN is a project developed by a group of students from ITE College West. Team Leader, Wayne Soh Kai, shared: “Designed to foster an emotionally safe environment, our board game, available in both physical and digital editions, empowers students to freely share their experiences and emotions. Seamlessly integrating gameplay with real-life scenarios, the game facilitates meaningful dialogues while equipping participants with essential coping strategies. Our vision is to transform mental health education into a dynamic experience that promotes resilience and empathy among students."

Innovation is the spark that fuels the changemakers of tomorrow! By thinking creatively and embracing new ideas, today's youth can solve complex problems and drive progress in ways we never thought possible.

Take ITE College Central’s SWEEEZY BINNY for example! This project is conceived to enhance cleanliness and inclusivity in Singapore's hawker centres and food courts.

Team Leader, Ashley Poh, explained: “SweeEZ is a self-cleaning table system that uses Arduino technology to automate the removal of leftovers into an integrated bin at the push of a button, effectively addressing the issue of insufficient cleaners during busy periods.” To complement this solution, the team is also exploring the introduction of “Binny”, a humanoid waste-collection robot. This robot would allow diners to signal for waste collection directly from their tables. This feature could particularly benefit individuals with disabilities and the elderly, enabling them to have their dining tables cleared with minimal physical effort.

🌟 The VTC-ITE International Student Seminar (ISS) 2024 kicks off today, June 26th, in Hong Kong! 🌟

This year’s Opening Ceremony saw an impressive gathering of 620 participants from Singapore, Hong Kong and Shenzhen, all eager to dive into our theme: "ISS Youth Change Makers." This seminar is not just an event; it’s a milestone in the enduring partnership between the Vocational Training Council (VTC), Hong Kong, and the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), Singapore, a collaboration that began in 1998.

Over the years, this partnership has flourished, facilitating knowledge sharing, staff and student exchanges, and the joint development of innovative Technical Diplomas. The ISS exemplifies this robust collaboration, offering a platform where students from VTC, ITE, and other institutions can deliberate on global issues and present creative solutions.

In his speech at the Opening Ceremony, ITE Chairman, Mr Andrew Chong said: “A change maker is someone who sees opportunities for improvement in their community and takes proactive steps to make that difference. They are driven by a purpose, greater than themselves, to create positive social, environmental, and economic impact. This seminar is a call to action for all of us to think critically and share our ideas on how to create a more sustainable and impactful world.”

Session 1 Opening Ceremony

In 2012, Elis made a mid-career switch to ITE, leaving her role as a Test Engineer to become a lecturer. "I've always had a passion for imparting skills and knowledge to the next generation. I believe that through education, I can make a meaningful impact on their futures."

Continuing Education and Training (CET) programs are typically designed for adult learners to acquire new skills, update their knowledge, or gain additional qualifications. As a CET trainer, Elis shared that her notable challenge is in guiding participants with prior experience to unlearn and correct incorrect techniques. Her greatest satisfaction arises from moments when participants express their desire to enrol in more courses, signalling their trust and satisfaction in the learning experience she provides.
