How to beat the heat 🌡 without using more energy to cool down? Imagine a giant underground water cooler for all the buildings in ! That's kind of what ENGIE's District Cooling System is like.
Instead of each building having its own air conditioner, they use water pipes from one central unit to draw chilled water, and this uses less energy.

Singapore faces the challenge of land scarcity, in collaboration with Urban Redevelopment Authority, Building and Construction Authority (Singapore), Housing & Development Board, Surbana Jurong Group and Ministry of National Development, we're exploring a solution: storing construction aggregates in underground caverns like Gali Batu Cavern (GBC).
This initiative offers significant benefits:
💡Frees Up Surface Space: GBC liberates valuable real estate for development projects.
🌳Mitigates Environmental Impact: Relocating activities underground reduces noise and dust pollution.
A recent study trip to Norway and Finland yielded valuable insights:
🤖Automation & Electrification: Increased use of electric and automated equipment promises enhanced safety, productivity, and a lower carbon footprint.
🔋Optimising Energy Usage: Innovative approaches, like utilising gravity for energy generation.
♻️Repurposing Opportunities: It is possible to integrate water storage and carbon sequestration for responsible land use.
The knowledge gained will be instrumental in creating a sustainable and technologically advanced GBC, aligning with Singapore's vision for a future-proof built environment.
Thanks to the Finland - Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and Norwegian Directorate of Mining at Trondheim for their valuable collaboration.

Now, we're taking it a step further at Kallang Way! We're revitalising a piece of industrial history – the last remaining three-storey “Terrace-Showroom" factory built in the 1980s.
This innovative approach is a win-win! We're preserving heritage and reducing construction waste for a more sustainable future. ♻️ Just reusing the first floor will save as much carbon as taking 1,000 cars off the road for a year!
Ar. Melvin Tan, President of the Singapore Institute of Architects, said, “We applaud the introduction of JTC’s Adaptive Reuse Framework and the designation of the terrace factory block at Kallang Way for sustainable redevelopment. Strategically positioned among mature estates, the Pelton Canal and the bustling Aljunied Road, the block has the potential to be revitalised with spaces that enhance community activity.”

As a developer of industrial estates, JTC often has to balance the interests of businesses and our environment. To achieve this, we take measures to maintain our sustainable building processes, in ways that enhance businesses and encourage them to adopt greener practises.
One example of this includes initiatives such as the SolarRoof programme, which involves the installation of solar panels on the rooftops of certain industrial estates to generate renewable energy. Other initiatives, such as the SolarLand programme, make use of unused industrial land spaces to set up mobile solar farms, allowing us to provide more energy for Singaporeans in a clean, sustainable way.
Our efforts led us to the SGBC-BCA's Leadership in Sustainability Awards 2024, and JTC is happy to announce that we were announced as one of the winners! We will continue to foster a greener approach to the way we design, build, operate, and manage our estates; and we encourage our partners to do the same!
