Is there a new canine respiratory outbreak?

The short answer is nobody knows yet. We don’t have enough information about what is actually at the center of the reports. Without accurate substantiated cases and information no one can say exactly what the underlying “bug” is.

1) If your dog is young and otherwise healthy, you probably have very little to worry about.

2) If there is an infectious (bacterial, viral, fungal, etc.) respiratory disease going around then as long as you and your pet(s) are only around other pets that you’re familiar with and their health status then you’re relatively safe.

3) If your pet is sick, especially with respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, and fever then you should consult with your veterinarian AND keep your pet out of public, animal dense areas…. Common sense and common courtesy.

4) If you have an older pet or pet that has health issues such as diabetes, chronic respiratory, and cardiac issues, then they are at a greater risk for ANY infectious disease. These pets should have limited exposure to animal dense areas.

5) If your pet is at greater risk and exposed to animal dense areas, we are recommending the Bordetella (kennel cough) AND canine parainfluenza vaccine (CPIV). We offer an intra-nasal combination vaccine, recommended to be given every 6 months. Remember vaccines are not 100%, they only help mitigate risk.

6) The main thing to remember is that we will get through this together, hopefully with a minimal amount of panic and excessive strain on our pets.

We often times get so caught up in every day life and work, that we forget just how blessed we are. AVC isn’t just a place to work or just a source of income. It’s a family and we truly are so thankful for everything we’ve been blessed with. There aren’t enough words to express how fortunate we are.

Today we had our Thanksgiving lunch at the clinic, and our employees did not disappoint with the dishes they chose to bring! If our vet medicine skills ever fail, we have chef school as an alternative. 😝🦃

Happy Tuesday everyone! We just wanted to let you guys know that we are open 8am-12pm on Wednesday and Friday of this week, and we are closed all day Thursday. If you have an emergency, we do have an on call technician and doctor available until 10pm each night. That phone number is 803-215-9392.

This is a gentle reminder that we are currently booking into March for all adult pet wellness exams. We do send reminders out 4 months early, but we really encourage forward booking before you leave the office from their current exam. 🐶
