Congratulations Gwendolyn H. Everett, Ph.D., C'73, for being named the interim dean of the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University. An art historian with more than 30 years of teaching and administration experience at the collegiate level and the current associate dean for Faculty Affairs, Everett’s new role is effective July 1st. She will replace fellow alumna dean Phylicia Rashad, whose three-year tenure ends on June 30th.
Everett has held several roles within the University, including associate dean for the Division of Fine Arts when it was housed under the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition to her academic experience, Everett has been a research consultant with the National Museum of African American History and Culture Plan for Action Presidential Commission. Her findings on African American art collections were documented in 2003’s “The Time Has Come: Report to the President and to the Congress." Drop a 💙in the comments and wish her congratulations.
Congratulations to Jai Ferrell, C’2005, the new chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta. We are incredibly proud to celebrate Jai as she makes history as the first person of color to lead this amazing organization in its 103-year history. Her leadership and vision will undoubtedly inspire and empower countless young girls.
In a recent Instagram post, Jai shared that her grandmother, Eloise Holloway, C'49, once served as Co-Leader of her Girls Scout Troop 881 and our beloved Dr. Jane Smith, C'68, was her mentor and a member of the first African-American Girl Scouts Troop in Georgia. We are so proud of you Jai. May the Spelman and Girl Scouts connection continue. 💙💚

On June 19, 1865, freedom finally came for the 250,000 enslaved people of Texas. That day, which would become known as Juneteenth, the Army arrived to enforce what had already been the law of the land for two and a half years — the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, we recognize that Juneteenth not only marks the end of slavery but it is also a day of restoration, remembrance, and celebration.
