College of Computing at Georgia Tech
Inspiring our community to be more. At Georgia Tech, we teach, research and learn computing unlike any other program, because we are unlike any other program.
We are a world-class computing community that is much more than the sum of our many parts. Whether it’s research, theory or practical application, we go beyond “collaboration” or “interdisciplinary” – we shatter boundaries and create new ways of exploring problems. We have a dedicated, world-class faculty that sets the agenda for computing research across the United States and the world. Our stude

Anita Borg - was a computer scientist that emphasized the importance of women in CS. In the late 1980’s she took on many initiatives to create opportunities for women to enter the field of computing. She was the co-founder of the Grace Hopper celebration and the Systers – an electronic community for women in CS. For her work she was awarded the Ada Lovelace award from the Association of Women in Computing (AWS.) 1949-2003

Katherine Johnson – was a Nasa mathematician that was able to figure out the calculations that created the path to allow a spacecraft to orbit the earth, and later to put a man on the moon. The remarkable thing about Katherine Johnson is that she was able to use math to overcome the racial biases and misogyny that kept her out of the space task group – although she was more than qualified. 1918-2020
Ada Lovelace – regarded as the first computer programmer. Most well-known for the work she did with Charles Babbage on the proposed Mechanical General-Purpose Machine which was an analytical engine. She was an excellent annotator and compared the machine ability to weave numbers to the way a loom weaves flowers/leaves the early programming language ADA is named for her. 1815 -1852

Check out this feature of one of our own! CS student Jordan Lym, who is president of Starter Bikes at Georgia Tech! Also, learn about Georgia Tech's biking community and get involved throughout October's Atlanta Bike Challenge at the link:
https://www.news.gatech.edu/news/2021/09/30/join-october-atlanta-bike-challenge
Throughout , we will be sharing the stories of members of the Georgia Tech riding community. Meet Starter Bikes at Georgia Tech president Jordan Lym:
Jordan is a fourth year Industrial Design and Computer Science student, who discovered riding during his first year at Georgia Tech. During his leadership at Starter Bikes, he has focused on building the Georgia Tech bike community through social group rides, biking awareness, and affordable bike resources for campus. He also wants to grow the Starter Bikes organization by providing volunteers opportunities for leadership, confidence, and self-sufficiency.
What inspired you to start riding?
My grandma told me I looked a lil' chubby when I went back home from winter break my freshman year. Also, I was tired of walking everywhere, since it felt like I was losing time, so when I came back for the spring semester, I got a bike through Starter Bikes, which improved my fitness and increased the amount of free time I had on my hands. When I went home for the summer, my grandma told me I lost some weight since the last time I saw her, so that was relieving!
How many miles is your commute one-way and how long does the ride vs drive take?
2 miles, which takes 5-10 minutes to ride and 30 minutes (including parking) to drive
Why do you choose to commute by bike?
As I have become more involved with the bike community, I have learned that biking brings me back to being a kid. I would much rather have fun on my bike than have to pay for gas, sit in traffic, and be stressed. The bike for me is my happy place, and the fact that I can ride it to where I need to go is what keeps me positive every day.
What is your favorite aspect of riding?
I love feeling connected to the outdoors when on a bike. I truly believe that you can never experience a city just in a car. When I am cruising through the city or on campus, I get to see and feel my surroundings and have more of an appreciation of everything.
What practical advice would you share with someone who wants to start riding?
Ride with a friend, it'll help you gain the confidence you need to guide yourself through the best streets.
Each week, there are two great options for help with bike repairs and maintenance on campus! On Wednesdays from 10am-2pm, AztecCycles is at the Community Market, and, on Fridays, join Starter Bikes in the CRC Parking Deck during their open hours from 4-7pm (3-6 on the last Friday of the month).

Georgia Tech experts: Online learning doesn’t have to be inferior Two prominent Georgia Tech computer scientists maintain online classes can be as effective as face-to-face instruction and urge expansion of opportunities that liberate students from the confines of a classroom and an 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily schedule.
“Many of these undergraduate students are talented and have the motivation to do the research and drive innovation, but may not have resources needed to take off, including advice or roles models from their community. Organizing initiatives such as this give us an opportunity to disseminate resources, let these types of students know about opportunities, and motivate them to take the challenge.” —Alexander Rodriguez, Ph.D., School of Computational Science and Engineering
