During a heatwave, people experiencing homelessness are vulnerable as they lack access to shelter and cooling facilities. The extreme temperatures can lead to heat-related illnesses, dehydration, and even fatalities among this population. It’s important when witnessing anyone in discomfort to provide immediate and adequate resources such as cooling centers, water distribution, and outreach services. These services become critical to ensuring safety and well-being during such weather events.

Homelessness can take various forms, not just the stereotypical image of tents and shopping carts on the streets. It can manifest in individuals resorting to couch hopping or seeking refuge in shelters. Sometimes, the issue may be concealed from immediate view, with people occupying friends' dorms or even living discreetly in their cars. This hidden homelessness can often be experienced by coworkers or classmates, making it vital to recognize that it can affect anyone and extend our support and understanding to those in need.

Homelessness can have severe physical consequences for individuals. Lack of access to proper nutrition and hygiene increases the risk of malnutrition, infections, and chronic diseases. Exposure to extreme weather conditions, such as cold temperatures or excessive heat, can lead to hypothermia, frostbite, or heatstroke. The stress and uncertainty of living without stable housing can also negatively impact mental health, exacerbating existing conditions or leading to new ones.

It's not uncommon for youth to desire quick change and feel impatient with the process. It can be challenging to navigate instability and uncertainty during this phase of life.
While it's important to have goals and aspirations, it's also essential to recognize that meaningful change often takes time and perseverance. Building trust in the process involves learning from setbacks and embracing personal growth along the way. Young adults must remember that it's okay to seek support from mentors, friends, or professionals who can provide guidance during this transformative period.

Imagine:
👉🏽 Being uprooted from everything you know
👉🏽 Having LITTLE or NO family support
👉🏽 Feeling defeated
👉🏽 Being exploited
👉🏽 Feeling unsure of where to turn and who to trust
Many youth may feel one or all of the above. It’s important to recognize that achieving housing does cure and solve all problems. Youth require comprehensive and unwavering support to achieve LONG TERM STABILITY.
@ Mend Culture we are striving to do just that 🙏🏽🙏🏽🚀
