"Since peaking at over 1.5 million people in 2009, the U.S. prison population has declined, but at the achingly slow pace of approximately 1 percent annually. At this rate, it will take until nearly the end of the century to get back to the incarceration levels of the late 1980s.

To understand the systemic racism that breeds what we call "mass incarceration" this book is a must read. Michelle Alexander educated us about the "New Jim Crow" , Doug Blackmon clarifies that the system is in fact "Neoslavery". Knowing the history gives us better understanding of the present.
Read about the cities, like Atlanta, built by prison labor. Read about legislative hearings and investigations in the early 1900s that exposed brutality and inhumane conditions way back then. Compare with the atrocities the DOJ is documenting now, 120 years later in the same prison systems of the Confederacy. Some things have changed of course, but we must look critically at why we still have such a long way to go. Keep on pushing.
