What a world without prisons could look like Deanna Van Buren designs restorative justice centers that, instead of taking the punitive approach used by a system focused on mass incarceration, treat crime as a breach of relationships and justice as a process where all stakeholders come together to repair that breach. Action Alert: Urge Your Senator to Vote NO on SB 44 – Southern Center for Human Rights 03/18/2023

SB 44 is a bill that will push Justice in Georgia backwards fueling mass incarceration and criminalizing poverty
Some elected reps think that the way to get themselves re-elected is to push harsh, irrational, punitive laws that hurt our communities but keep our prisons full, If you care about the crisis in our prisons, the lack of oversight, the hemorrhaging budget now at $1.38 BILLION and you want to see some kind of positive change CALL YOUR REPS BEFORE MONDAY AND DEMAND THEY VOTE NO ON SB 44.
It is a bad, harsh, opportunistic bill with no basis in science, economics or common decency. Google it for yourself and get on the phone
Here are some links. They think we're not watching. They think we don't know the facts, Tell them that justice and common sense demand a NO VOTE ON SB 44

Perverse Financial Incentives in Criminal Justice 07/29/2022

"Since peaking at over 1.5 million people in 2009, the U.S. prison population has declined, but at the achingly slow pace of approximately 1 percent annually. At this rate, it will take until nearly the end of the century to get back to the incarceration levels of the late 1980s.

What’s the holdup? We're going to let you in on one of the dirty little secrets of our criminal justice system: It pays to punish."

To understand the systemic racism that breeds what we call "mass incarceration" this book is a must read. Michelle Alexander educated us about the "New Jim Crow" , Doug Blackmon clarifies that the system is in fact "Neoslavery". Knowing the history gives us better understanding of the present.
Read about the cities, like Atlanta, built by prison labor. Read about legislative hearings and investigations in the early 1900s that exposed brutality and inhumane conditions way back then. Compare with the atrocities the DOJ is documenting now, 120 years later in the same prison systems of the Confederacy. Some things have changed of course, but we must look critically at why we still have such a long way to go. Keep on pushing.
