The Indigo Foundation is grounded in creating environments that breed economic empowerment for women
Hey, Beloved Black Girl.
You are not defined by barriers. π€
We all need grace. And you are deserving.
Tough question time: do you really want to be a nurse? π‘
If you look at the country's top healthcare companies (the ones generating millions and billions), what do they share in common?
*
One word: providers.
*
CVS Health provides one thing: they are committed to advancing health equity, bringing care to more people and protecting our planet through environmental, social and governance priorities.
*
UnitedHealth Group provides one thing: a mission to help people live healthier lives and help make the health system worj better for everyone.
*
HCA Healthcare provides one thing: people taking care of people.
*
The Indigo Foundation (that's us!) provides one thing: an environment that breed economic empowerment for women of color from underserved communities through a pathway to nursing. We do this by providing nursing school scholarships to Georgian women.

3 Ways to Focus as a Nursing Studentπ‘
#1. Write a to-do list
It's easier to focus when you break down a large task into smaller, more concise steps.
Before you sit down, spend a few minutes creating a plan. Or better yet, do it the night before. That way you can hit the ground running in tbe morning.
*
#2. Set a timer.
Tight deadlines help you focus better. I use the timer on my phone in increments. Once it alarms I take a 5-15 minute break.
Work hard and focus 100%; then take a much-needed break before starting another session.
*
#3. Turn up the music!
Some people find that turning on music helps them focus better. It drowns out the noise, especially if you're living in a dorm, and keeps your mind going on the task at hand.
YouTube has music that's designed to help you concentrate. Try out different music that best fit YOU. Everyone is different and what may help others may not necessarily be of benefit to you.
*
Give these strategies a try and see what works better for you to help you focus. Let me know what strategy was the most helpful in the comments below!

I believe there is so much more to nursing than passing meds on time.
*
It takes grit, passion, and a thirst for improving healthcare. For me, it's about having the back of the underprivileged young black women in Atlanta who truly want to make a difference, but don't have have the funds to do so.
*
I am here to be their voice until they cultivate their own. IFRN is making a difference and we need more people to help.

HOW IMPORTANT IS SELF-LOVE? Self-love, which is also often referred to as self-compassion, involves taking care of your own needs, accepting your weaknesses and failures as well as your strengths, and staying in touch with your emotions. Because selflessness is such a prized virtue in many circles, many believe self-love is egoistical. Caring for other people is important, but it shouldnβt come at the expense of your own well-being.

Be open to change! ββββββββ
Progress and growth require change. As women of color at work, our career paths may not always be predictable, for a host of obvious (and some not so obvious) reasons. To circumvent many of the barriers standing in the way of womenβs leadership and advancement, we must learn to welcome and embrace change. Whether that means saying yes to non-traditional opportunities, embarking on different career paths, or knowing when to forego comfort for growth, be open to change! What other success rules can you share about being a woman of color in the corporate world? ββββββββ

Steps to Becoming a Nurse ββββββββ
The first step to becoming a nurse is getting a solid education, whether you hope to be a licensed practical or vocational nurse (LPN/LVN), registered nurse (RN), or administrator. Every state and the District of Columbia require students to graduate from an accredited nursing program to become licensed. Choose A Nursing Path: Nursing can take you in many directions, from starting out as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) or staff nurse to working your way up to nurse administrator. When choosing your career path, think about the type of work environment you prefer. For example, RNs can be found in hospitals, doctorsβ offices, and other medical settings, but certified nursing assistants often work in nursing homes. What type of setting will inspire you most? You should also consider what role you want to play. If you want to support medical staff as part of a team, a CNA or LPN/LVN could suit you well. If you want to manage other nurses and assistants or oversee systems, a career as an RN or advanced practice nurse is likely a good fit. Because there are so many facets to healthcare, nurses often specialize in certain areas, such as geriatrics or critical care. If you have a passion for a certain type of nursing, consider the type of education youβll need to get there.ββββββββ

Challenge yourself to speak up.ββββββββ
Speaking up as a woman of color at work can be double-edged sword. On one hand, you may be labeled as βtoo assertiveβ or downright βangryβ. On the other hand, not raising your voice may make you seem incompetent or disinterested. Whatever bias you may have to confront, Iβve found that the best answer, more often than not, is to speak up. You have way too much knowledge, insight and experience not to share it to empower others and increase your team and companyβs efficiency.ββββββββ

Find your sweet spot.ββββββββ
There are many challenges associated with being a woman of color in a corporate environment. Yet they shouldnβt prevent you from excelling and being the best, you can be. Finding your sweet spot, that overlap between your skills, interests and opportunities, is crucial to achieving success, especially as woman of color at work. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
The reality is very often, you may have to work harder at convincing others of your competence and professionalism. Hitting on your key kills and interests will give you that competitive edge youβll need to attract the right opportunities.ββββββββ

Let your behavior dispel stereotypes.
Stereotypes, such as the βangry black womanβ, and other pre-conceived (and generally false) ideas about women of color, may not disappear any time soon. However, the most effective way to dispel them, and prove some of the myths and beliefs around women of color wrong, is through consistent, positive behavior. While I was tempted to directly confront certain stereotypes in the course of my career, I came to understand that positive action is most effective.-- Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β # Β Β Β
One Way to Empower Women of Color Economically?
Provide Child Care: Evidence suggests that the availability of childcare is strongly associated with an increase in womenβs labor force participation and productivity. Child care, particularly high-quality childcare, is one of the most important enablers of womenβs economic empowerment and can have a positive impact on childrenβs learning

Stop being afraid of being yourself.
Most people in the corporate world wear a mask. Itβs just a fact. However, for women of color at work, wearing a mask has many times been a necessity. According to studies by the Center for Women Policy, 21% of women of color do not think they can be themselves at work. Another 28 to 44% believe they must downplay their ethnicity to increase their chances of success at work.
While this is still the reality in many, if not most, corporate environments, authenticity is still the best way to change the dialogue about women of color at work. The more we hide behind our corporate masks, the less we can bring focus on the actual issues faced by women of color at work.
