Author Junot Diaz: And always I was afraid—afraid that the r**e had “ruined” me; afraid that I would be “found out”; afraid afraid afraid. “Real” Dominican men, after all, aren’t r**ed. And if I wasn’t a “real” Dominican man I wasn’t anything. The r**e excluded me from manhood, from love, from everything.

Mosaic Magazine

"Each year, the Cooperative Children’s Book Center tracks the diversity in children’s and YA books. According to last year’s survey, Latinx authors only wrote 94 of 3,200 books – a number that accounts for just 2.9 percent, even though Latinx comprise about 17 percent of the US population. Looking at this data, there’s no easy way to tell how many Afro-Latinx authors wrote these 94 books, but given the continued lack of visibility for this marginalized group, it’s likely that the number is very small."

So exactly how many years of sexual abuse of black women is too many? 10 years? 20? 30? At what point has someone gone too far and we all say f**k them, f**k their music, f**k their money, f**k their legacy, and f**k their freedom?

Sign the Petition

It's time for us to come together as a community and stop allowing artists to get away with the sexual abuse of Black women. Join Creative Currents in ending R. Kelly's career, getting him off of our airways and in jail where he belongs. We will be delivering our petition to all of Atlanta's black radio stations and having them pledge to no longer play the music of a known ra**st, pe*****le and child molester. Black Lives Matter includes not just external threats to our lives, safety and well being, but internal ones as well.

Please sign the petition today and spread the word to your communities. We encourage cities across the nation to do the same!!

Photography of Nadine Ijewere.

Growing up part (on her mother's side) and part (on her father's side) in was difficult for Nadine Ijewere. She didn't entirely identify with the culture of either heritage, partly because, like her, both her parents were born and raised in the . She remembers being jealous of friends who were more connected to their traditions.

"A strong part of one's identity is their cultural background," she says. "So, as I got older, I went on a journey to really find and connect with my own." This journey inspired Ijewere to further explore and express that theme through her photography. "I'm interested in how other people identify and celebrate who they are and where they're from," she explains.
