Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities

DBHDD was created to provide a network of support for citizens with mental health & IDD challenges.

Created by the Governor and General Assembly in 2009, the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) and its network of community providers offer treatment and support services to help people with behavioral health challenges achieve recovery by focusing on their strengths. Through uniquely tailored supports and services, we help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities attain independence and lead meaningful and fulfilling lives.

🌟 Direct Support Professional Recognition Week 🌟This week, we’re celebrating the dedicated and innovative Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) who are the heart and soul of supports for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in Georgia. These unsung heroes work tirelessly to enrich the lives of those they serve, and we are proud to stand alongside them.

Today, we’re spotlighting three incredible DSPs who exemplify the compassion and dedication it takes to make a difference:

💙 Viney Williams, Thomas Grady Service Center (17 years in the field): Viney entered this field with a passion for improving lives and bringing happiness to others. She believes that being a DSP gives her a sense of purpose, allowing her to bring joy to those she serves. Viney’s favorite saying is, “The More You Give; The More You Receive,” as she feels she receives more in return than she could ever give.

💙 Kandis Mingo, Unison Behavioral Health (12 years in the field): Kandis’ journey began at 15 when she volunteered as a Special Olympics coach. Her passion for working with individuals with IDD has only grown over the years. She believes that being a DSP requires commitment, patience, and the ability to help others see the best in themselves. Her favorite quote is, “There is no greater disability in society than the inability to see a person as more.” ~ Robert M. Hensel

💙 Jazmine Whitaker Garrett, Avita Community Partners (1 year in the field): Jazmine chose this career to be a positive role model and help others learn valuable life skills while learning from them as well. She finds joy in the small moments that make the challenging days worthwhile. Her favorite quote is, “I do not have a disability; I have a gift! Others may see it as a disability, but I see it as a challenge. This challenge is a gift because I have to become stronger to get around it, and smarter to figure out how to use it; others should be so lucky.” ~ Shane E. Bryan

These stories are just a glimpse into the lives of the remarkable individuals who work as DSPs.

STAY TUNED: We're highlighting three more DSP superheroes later this week.

We had the best time participating in the Northeastern Judicial Circuit's Mental Health Summit, which aims to transform resources for Hall and Dawson counties. DBHDD has partnerships with judicial circuits across our state, and we're making great strides to overcome mental and behavioral health barriers in our criminal justice system.

Sheree Ralston, Community Outreach Manager, provided updates on several initiatives to expand access to behavioral health services, such as creating the state's first stand-alone jail-based restoration center.

Thank you Superior Court Judge Lindsay Burton and State Court Judge Kelley Robertson for hosting this important event!
