We’ve got that Friday feeling; do you? Happy Friday! Today we’re celebrating with Pam Cooper who was named deputy director of the city’s Planning and Inspection Services Department.

Pam has been employed with the city for seven years in Planning and Inspections. Her job responsibilities include overseeing licensing, permitting for residential and commercial developments, code enforcement, zoning, plan submittals, and assisting Director Scott Gaither with the day-to-day operations of the department.

Pam’s a United States Air Force veteran, a member of the Georgia Association of Business Tax Officials, and is a 2024 graduate of Leadership Rockdale.

“Pam is the definition of a “go-to” person for all things related to Planning and Inspections,” said City Manager Kameron Kelley. “Her extensive knowledge of developments within the city, along with her tremendous customer service skills, make her a great fit for the position.”

Congratulations, Pam! 👏🎉

Take a look at this piece of Olympic history recently shared with us by former city manager Tony Lucas. He found his invitation and program for the opening ceremony of the 105th Session of the International Olympic Committee prior to the opening of the 1996 Olympic Games. 🥇🥈🥉

The ceremony, hosted by then International Olympic Committee Chairman Juan Antonio Samaranch, and the reception that followed, hosted by Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games President and CEO Billy Payne, were held at the Woodruff Arts Center Symphony Hall and High Museum of Art, respectively, on July 14, 1996. The invitation and program are so elegant and delicate!

We’re reminiscing about days gone by and the time Conyers and the Georgia International Horse Park were in the spotlight 28 years ago when we welcomed the world as part of the Centennial Olympic Games. We wish Team USA luck in Paris and will be watching the 2024 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremonies tomorrow night! 🇺🇸

Here's a friendly reminder from the Conyers Police Department about the school zone speed enforcement on Pine Log Road. School starts next Tuesday, July 30, so be mindful of increased traffic and buses on the roads.

On Tuesday, July 30, it’s back to school for the students after the summer break. To make sure they have a safe school year, let’s all remember to keep to the speed limits in school zones. The automated school zone speed enforcement on Pine Log Road will start again on July 30, 2024. If you go over the school zone speed limit of 25 MPH by more than 11 MPH, you’ll get an automated citation.

Let’s all do our part by driving at the speed limit and keeping our students and faculty safe.

Congratulations to Raina Philippus in Planning & Inspections on 5️⃣ years with the city! 🎉

Raina began her career with the city as an administrative clerk and because of her propensity for learning and helping others, she earned the promotion to zoning administrator. As zoning administrator, Raina handles a broad range of daily responsibilities from assisting customers inquiring about business licenses or building permits to administering planning, zoning, and development ordinances by reviewing development and building permit applications and plans.

Raina was instrumental in the process for updating the city’s Comprehensive Plan in 2023 by engaging the public for involvement and feedback. Ever the dedicated employee, she is often found with a smile on her face whether it be accepting applications, creating staff reports, or presenting to the Conyers/Rockdale Planning Commission, the Conyers Historic Preservation Commission, or to the Conyers Board of Zoning Appeals and Adjustments. Raina’s knowledge and friendly demeanor is appreciated by customers and co-workers alike. She can also be found assisting with her phenomenal photography skills at city events and employee functions.

Join us in congratulating Raina on this milestone anniversary! 👏

It’s summer in Georgia, y’all! ☀️While temperatures are not as hot 🔥 as they were earlier in the week, the humidity has returned and that can be just as uncomfortable and dangerous.

Remember these safety tips from the Rockdale County Emergency Management Agency:

🔆Never leave people or pets in a closed car on a warm day.
🔆If pets are outside, make sure they have plenty of cool water and access to shade. Be mindful of asphalt/dark pavement that are very hot to your pet’s feet!
🔆Take cool showers/baths.
🔆Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
🔆Use your oven less to help reduce the temperature in your house.
🔆Wear a hat and seek shade if you’re outdoors.
🔆Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
🔆Avoid high-energy activities or work outdoors during midday heat, (11 a.m.-2 p.m.) if possible.
🔆Check on others – family members, older adults and neighbors.
🔆Be mindful of symptoms of heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Special thanks to our employees who are working in the heat, like Wayne Sneed in Public Works & Transportation, who was out watering our hanging baskets in Olde Town! 💦We appreciate you and hope you’re staying hydrated!

Have a great weekend and stay cool! 💧😎

Congratulations to Brian Frix, who was named chief of operations for the city of Conyers effective July 1! Brian joined the city in 2016 as deputy director of Public Works and Transportation before promotion to director of the department in 2021.

In his new role, Frix will be responsible for overseeing all operations of the following departments: Planning and Inspections, Public Relations and Tourism, Public Works and Transportation, the Georgia International Horse Park and Cherokee Run Golf Club.

“While his background in public works, engineering and stormwater is extensive, Brian is very knowledgeable in all departments that will now be within his purview. He works cooperatively with those departments thanks to his dynamic and collaborative leadership style in his former role as director of Public Works and Transportation. I’m excited to see how he’ll continue to serve the city in this new capacity,” said City Manager Kameron Kelley.

Today we’re congratulating Keisha Norton for 10 years of service to the city and the Conyers Police Department! 🎉 Keisha began her career with the CPD in June 2014 as a communications operator. Keisha had previous criminal justice experience as a corrections officer where she learned police radio communication by 10 codes and signals, as well as how to deal with high pressure situations. It made her a perfect fit for a communications operator position.

Keisha’s strong call-taking, dispatch abilities, multi-tasking and high stress tolerance led to her being promoted into the position of communications supervisor in September 2016 where she serves today as a shift supervisor in the 911 Center. In addition to her duties as a supervisor, Keisha is a certified communications training officer and trains new communications operators when they come on board. She is always looking for ways to help operators on her shift to produce quality work and to work more efficiently.

“The City of Conyers Communications Division appreciates the dedicated work that Supervisor Norton has put in over the last 10 years,” said Communications Division Manager Kelly Swift. “She is a valuable member of the 911 team.”
