Networking was crucial to how I found my internship. On the first day of orientation, I introduced myself to a girl as we were making our way into the law school building. She quickly became one of my best friends at the law school, and introduced me to one of my peers, who ended up referring me to his firm. It is crucial to build interpersonal relationships and network as much as possible. These relationships helped me land my internship back in my home state of New York.

Student Motivational Blog Post- Kadale Lubin 3L

My advice is to focus on implementing systems in our lives and not just goals. The goals are great, but the small systems we implement make the 5-10 year goal easier to process and attain. Everyone’s path is not the same and yours may require persistence, a boost of confidence, and a willingness to take risks. What ultimately worked for me was exercising the confidence to inquire about options that eventually materialized, leading to my career success. Be consistent and creative in your networking strategy and maintain those relationships throughout law school. Remember that this is a journey, and though it may not get easier, you will get stronger.

Student Motivational Blog Post:
My experience with the job search process has been more akin to a marathon than a race. I applied to everything and anything during my 1L year but did not receive job offers until closer to the end of February/ beginning of March. The job search process can be stressful and tiring, especially when all of your time is already being consumed by schoolwork and extracurriculars, but reminding yourself of your end goal can keep you motivated. The reality for most students is that this process will take time, often more time than you’d expect. My best advice is to stay encouraged, continue to perfect your application materials, and keep applying to jobs because the end result is well worth it!

Student Motivational Blog Post:
In October, I reached out to a partner at a firm in Fort Worth, TX to inquire about 1L summer associate positions. I was told there are no 1L summer associate positions at that firm, but the partner introduced me to a judge on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. We exchanged several emails about an internship this summer. Two weeks later, this judge called me for a brief interview. I gave him several very specific reasons why I was interested in working for him. Prior to the interview, I spent hours and hours researching him, reading the Questions for the Record for his Senate confirmation, and reviewing his resume. He called me a week later to say it was clear I did my research and had thought about my reasons for applying. He offered me the internship.

Over Christmas break, I visited Fort Worth to meet with the judge. I also went to lunch with his clerks and got a tour of the courthouse. I had great conversations with everyone there. Shortly thereafter, he called me to say he believes I will be a great fit and he thinks I am going to enjoy the internship. Then, (completely unexpectedly) he invited me to clerk for him when I graduate! I accepted the offer.

I really believe it all came down to finding a good fit. Employers are interested in finding a good fit just as much as we are when we look for jobs and internships. Think about the things that are important to you: whether it is your faith, politics, values, interests, hobbies, or whatever else it may be - seek out opportunities where you can share these important things with your colleagues. Not only will it make your work more enjoyable, it will also help you land the job!
