After five days of travel and setup in the Mojave Desert in July, the Georgia Tech Experimental Rocketry team launched Fire on High β a sounding rocket that soared 9,000 feet into the atmosphere and reached speeds of Mach 1.8. The rocketβs propulsion and aerostructure concepts are two of the innovations the team tested as part of their larger goal of becoming the first collegiate team to launch a two-stage rocket into space ππ

The 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero was designed to be a space that allows people to come together and commemorate that day as a community. It was also designed by a Georgia Tech alum. Michael Arad witnessed the attacks from the rooftop of his Manhattan apartment not long after completing his masterβs degree in architecture at Tech. His design was chosen from thousands of submissions and is meant to be a space for visitors and New Yorkers alike as a living part of the city.
Every year on September 11, a group of Georgia Tech students places 2,977 flags on Tech Green to commemorate and honor the lives lost on this day in 2001. πΊπΈ

The Alpha Delta Chi sorority will no longer exist at Georgia Tech. After over 20 years on campus, the Sigma Chapter has sold its house on campus, pledging the proceeds from the sale to create an endowed scholarship for students with low and limited income. President Cabrera recently thanked members of the sorority for their generosity, which is one of the largest gifts given by a Greek organization to Georgia Tech. π

Cassie Mitchell has a degenerative neurological condition that has left much of her body paralyzed, but she refuses to let that slow her down. A professor in biomedical engineering at Georgia Tech, Mitchell is in France for her fourth Paralympic Games. Georgia Tech breaks ground on a new 10,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility, The Hangar, aimed at bolstering research in advanced aviation technologies. Home of the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering, the facility will house specialized laboratories, including an electric powertrain laboratory, a propulsion system test cell, an avionics lab, composite fabrication areas, and an area for integrating prototype aircraft with wing spans of up to 20 feet. Georgia Tech liberal arts student, Jeremy Paredes, interned with NBC Sports/NBC Olympics as part of the Craft Edit team, editing features and cinematic recaps throughout the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This assignment was his second stint with NBC Olympics. Paredes also served on the editing team for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. π₯

Located on the second floor of the Georgia Tech Bookstore, Green Goodbyes will maintain a diverse inventory of gently used items, including clothing, accessories, books, household items, and other miscellaneous items. All currently enrolled students of Georgia Tech are eligible to participate in the free item selection process at the Green Goodbyes store. Georgia Tech staff member Avard Moncur represented the Bahamas in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, earning a bronze and silver medal, respectively. The now Biomedical Engineering Masterβs Program Manager also won two straight NCAA Division I championships for Auburn in the 400 meters, in 2000 and 2001, and took home gold medals in the 400 meters and 4x400 meter relay at the 2001 World Championship. A Georgia Tech alum has emerged from the first NASA mission to simulate a year-long stay on Mars. Ross Brockwell spent 378 days in Mars Dune Alpha β a 1,700-square-foot habitat designed to replicate the conditions and environment a crew would experience on the Red Planet. Brockwell, a civil engineering graduate, served as flight engineer and participated in robotic operations, agricultural activities, and surface walks.

In 1996, Georgia Tech's campus served as the heart of the Olympic Village β where athletes lived, journalists reported, and visitors from around the world gathered for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Tech also served as the venue for swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, water polo, modern pentathlon, boxing, and Paralympic volleyball.

Among these Yellow Jacket Olympians, Chris Eubanks and Nic Fink will represent Team USA in tennis and swimming, respectively. A Georgia Tech alum has founded a startup company and developed an innovative implant that could improve treatment for a common and debilitating knee injury. Jonathan Schwartz and OrthoPreserve have created an implant that mimics the shape, structure, and biomechanical properties of the meniscus and developed a surgical technique that could drastically improve the recovery and long-term health of meniscus injury patients. -- https://b.gatech.edu/3YabANI
A team of former Yellow Jackets swimmers, a current Georgia Tech coach, and an Olympic gold medalist added a new member this weekend at the Trans Tahoe Relay β the President of Georgia Tech, Γngel Cabrera.
