In 2017, during the College’s Founder’s Week, Frankie Beverly was awarded the Presidential Award of Distinction by the 11th President of Morehouse College, John Silvanus Wilson, Jr., in recognition of his significant contributions to music and culture. His legacy as a transformative artist will endure through his timeless music.

: Four Morehouse Men were selected to participate in Harvard’s Summer Venture in Management Program (SVMP) in Boston, Massachusetts.

George Lester III ’24, Gera Baano-Stewart II ’23, Porter Tynes III ’24, and Osco Williams III ’25 were selected for the SVMP on the Harvard Business School campus because of their proven academic prowess and leadership at Morehouse College.

The SVMP is a highly selective one-week residential program designed to increase diversity and opportunity in business education. The program targets high-potential undergraduate and graduate college students who are making an impact in their school or community.

🎓🏠 Unapologetic Excellence: Sandtori Solomon ’28

Sandtori Solomon ’28 is a freshman business major from Atlanta, Georgia.

A recent graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta, Sandtori has been personifying servant leadership in the community for years. In high school, Sandtori amassed 145 hours of service via mentoring, beautification, literacy, and enrichment programs, including many hours of engagement with the community service organization, Raising Expectations.

In addition to being selected as a Bonner Scholar, Solomon plans to become an active member of the NAACP, Howard Thurman Honors Program, and Collegiate 100 while at the College.

In a historic move, James M. Jeter '13 has been promoted to Creative Director, Design & Brand Direction for Men's Polo at Ralph Lauren. He is the first Black Creative Director in the 57-year history of Polo Ralph Lauren.

Jeter, who has spent the entirety of his career with the brand, climbed the corporate ladder from intern to design associate to a lead designer of the watershed Morehouse and Spelman Colleges Collection by Polo Ralph Lauren which launched in 2022.

🏈 The Maroon Tigers gave a valiant effort in their first game of the season at B.T. Harvey Stadium, and despite falling short of the victory, the Maroon Tigers were poised defensively recording two safeties and allowing four touchdowns. This home opener also marked the first game under the leadership of our new head coach, Terance Mathis.

The Maroon Tigers will take on the visiting Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls this Saturday, September 7th, at 3 P.M. in B.T. Harvey Stadium.

Dr. Cynthia Hewitt, professor of sociology and director of the Institute for Comparative Labor Studies (ICLS) joins to discuss how important the equitable treatment of all laborers is to ensure a positive economy.

ICLS was established in 2017 to create pathways for Morehouse graduates to enter social justice careers in leadership, research, and community organizing. The ICLS seeks to embed the labor studies discipline at the College and provide an education that examines the role of black workers in the civil rights movement and American labor history to offer a 21st-century vision for sustainable meaningful work lives for African Americans and all workers.

: The Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, Illinois has ended, and three Maroon Tiger members were there to capture content as a part of an immersive experience focusing on investigative journalism.

MT Editor-in-Chief Colin Royal ’25, alongside staff writer Jackson Greenleaf ’25 and photographer Aaron Watts ’25, attended the DNC with Morehouse sports journalism associate professor, Ron Thomas.

In addition to attending the convention, the students visited the Northwestern University School of Journalism and met with the institution’s admissions director. This prestigious institution is regarded as one of the best journalism schools in the country.

🎓🏠 Unapologetic Excellence: Elijah Gabriel '28

Elijah Gabriel '28 is a freshman economics major from Marietta, Georgia.

With a dual passion for private equity and film producing, Elijah aims to explore both of these outlets further at the College. In high school, Elijah would adamantly monitor the stock market and real estate and was a member of his school’s Financial Economics Club.

Moreover, Elijah created “Scotty Skates,” an Instagram page where he interviews other skateboarders about how skating helps with mental health.

Elijah plans to continue these passions through joining the Morehouse Business Association and the Morehouse Filmmakers Association.

: Darrell Hudson '02 was named chair of the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

Hudson was selected after a competitive nationwide search. His scholarly work focuses on the social determinants of health and how social stressors can impact health outcomes for a wide range of diseases. He has authored more than 70 publications, and he and his colleagues have secured over $15 million in research grants and contracts.

Hudson's five-year term will become effective August 26, 2024.

🎓🏠 Unapologetic Excellence: Josiah Lawson '28

Josiah Lawson '28 is a freshman computer science major from Stone Mountain, Georgia.

Josiah is not only a phenomenal , but he is also a third-generation future Morehouse Man, as his brother, father, and grandfather all attended the College.

In high school, Josiah was the 5A South Player of the Year and amassed over 1500 total career points, and 700+ career rebounds and is in the top 20 all-time leader scorers list for Dekalb County. Josiah has committed to the Maroon Tiger Basketball Team.

Ultimately, the Beta Club and National Honor Society graduate aspires to become a professional basketball player and founder of a tech startup.

🎓🏠 Unapologetic Excellence: Sean Hallers '28

Sean Hallers '28 is a freshman sports pre-cinema, television, and emerging media studies (CTEMS) major from Atlanta, Georgia.

As an aspiring filmmaker, Hallers credits alumnus Spike Lee ’79 for influencing him on his career journey. In 1997, Spike Lee ’79 interviewed Sean’s great-aunt for his documentary, “Four Little Girls.” She appeared in the film, as herself, the piano teacher.

In addition to his filmmaking pursuits, Sean was a talented vocalist in his high school chorus. For four consecutive years, he was named the Best Chorus Student.

While at the College, Sean plans to join the Morehouse Glee Club.

🎓🏠 Unapologetic Excellence: Calvin Butts '28

Calvin Butts '28 is a freshman sports journalism major from Harlem, New York.

As a dual-sport , Calvin excelled in both his athletic career and social endeavors. During his senior year, Calvin was the captain of both the varsity basketball and baseball teams and won team MVP for both. In addition, he was the lead trumpet for his jazz ensemble and president of his school’s Video Arts and Entertainment Club.

Calvin was greatly influenced to come to the House because of his grandfather and alumnus, Revered Dr. Calvin O. Butts III ’72. Calvin explained that his grandfather exuded confidence and pride in everything he did and how influential Morehouse was in his life journey.

While at the College, Calvin plans to continue his athletic excellence as a member of the Maroon Tiger Baseball Team.

🎓🏠 Unapologetic Excellence: William McConico II '28

William McConico II '28 is a freshman English major on the pre-law track from Detroit, Michigan.

As a , William was exposed to Morehouse College through his father and alumnus William McConico ’95. With strong academic rigor, William excelled in the classroom. He became a member of the National Honor Society and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Detroit Jesuit High School. His academic excellence propelled him to receive the full-ride Benjamin Elijah Mays Presidential Leadership Scholarship.

In high school, William was co-president of the Black Awareness Society for Education and captain of the mock trial team that participated in the Michigan State Championship. While at the College, William plans to pursue his path of becoming a lawyer by joining the pre-law society.

: The Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership is delighted to announce that Amos Johnson, Ph.D., ’96, has joined the Center as the new Coca-Cola Endowed Chair of Leadership Studies.

Dr. Johnson, an esteemed associate professor of Computer Science, brings 18 years of experience on the Morehouse College faculty to his new role as director of the Leadership Studies Program.

As director of the Leadership Studies Program, Dr. Johnson shares that his vision is “to build upon the rich tradition of social justice leadership while expanding the scope to include leadership in sectors such as science, technology, social media, and the intelligence community.”

Coach Ryan Jones is responsible for building the LAX programs at both Howard University and Bowie State University and is in his 3rd year of coaching for Morehouse.

Jamari is embarking on his collegiate journey as a college student. Inspired by University of Illinois professor and Morehouse College alumnus Dr. Irvin Hunt, Jamari learned about the Institution and decided to pursue an English degree like Dr. Hunt.

In high school, Jamari started the first People of Color club which focused on uplifting POC in the school and Champaign/Urbana community through fundraising and proactive discussion.

🎓🏠 Unapologetic Excellence: Khumo Kumalo ’28

Khumo Kumalo ’28 is a freshman political science major from Johannesburg, South Africa.

As an international student, Khumo was first exposed to Morehouse College through his father and alumnus, Mandla Kumalo. In high school, Khumo discovered his love for writing and language during his time as the captain of the South African debate team. Moreover, through his social-political organization, “Misunderstood,” Kumalo wrote a newsletter entitled, “94 was Misunderstood” to the Mail and Guardian, one of the largest newspapers in South Africa.

Khumo plans to pursue his passion for writing and debate at the College by joining the Student Government Association and the Debate Team.

🎓🏠 Unapologetic Excellence: Lance Johnson Jr. ’28

Lance Johnson Jr. ’28 is a freshman pre-CTEMS (Cinema, Television, and Emerging Media Studies) major from Charleston, South Carolina.

A true legacy with both of his parents graduating from Morehouse College and Spelman College, Johnson was motivated by the rich history, community, and brotherhood of the College when he made his decision to follow in his father’s footsteps.

In high school, Lance was the president of his gospel choir and participated in the All-State Choir, ACDA Honor Choir, Region Choir, and District Honor Choir. Additionally, Lance played varsity tennis for 6 years and was the team captain.

Lance plans to pursue these passions at the College through the Morehouse College Glee Club and Maroon Tiger Tennis Team.

Jeremy Hall '26, a second-year biology (pre-med) and finance minor, rang the closing bell at Nasdaq with the HBCU Social Impact Leaders Forum.As a University Innovation Fellow, Hall, along with two other Morehouse students, created a database for students to receive better opportunities in internships, fellowships, and job placement and, in 2023, was named a Catalyst for Change and Academic Trailblazer.

The Nasdaq Foundation and Shared Interest launched a partnership to expand opportunities for HBCU students. As part of the partnership, Jeremy along with other HBCU students participate in a 10-session workshop series where they learn about the fundamentals and history of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing, socially responsible investing, and impact investing.

Morehouse College has received a $20 million anonymous gift to expand academic programs and professorships. The contribution is the largest gift ever designated for faculty positions at Morehouse. It will be used to fund six endowed professorships that will enhance innovation and research in several academic areas: the Division of Business and Economics, the Division of Humanities, Social Sciences, Media, and the Arts (HSSMA), and the Division of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, including the Office of Health Professions. The anonymous gift was donated to the “Making Men of Consequence” Campaign, the largest fundraising initiative in Morehouse’s 157-year history. With the addition of the anonymous gift, nearly $290 million has been generated for the “Making Men of Consequence” Campaign to date. The goals of the $500 million campaign are to expand investment in student scholarships, innovative academic programs, athletics, campus improvements, and faculty recruitment and research.
