In the early 20th century, Georgia led the nation in oyster harvesting. By the 1930s, oysters became low in numbers due to overharvesting.
Now, scientists are trying to bring oysters back due to their importance for not only a healthy coastal ecosystem, but also in combating climate change by sequestering carbon. Oyster reefs keep the sediment–an organic matter containing carbon–in rivers from washing away and help marshes expand, which are good on their own at storing carbon.
To learn more about the work that scientists and researchers in Georgia are doing with oysters to mitigate climate change, read article titled “Rebuilding oyster reefs along the Georgia coast could help fight climate change.”
No part of the country is more at-risk and vulnerable to the effects of climate change than the Southeast. Atlanta now sees around eight more extreme heat days than it did in 1961 and the “heatwave season” has lengthened by more than 80 days. However, there is hope and possibilities exist for a brighter future.
To learn more about the consequences of climate change in Georgia, as well as the work that people are doing to reduce emissions, read the article titled “Report: Georgia, Southeast among the most at-risk from climate change.”

Over the summer, Samaya Stanley dove into four transcripts from the 2023 Georgia Climate Conference. As a GCP intern, she analyzed these transcripts through the lens of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Samaya coded and conducted a content analysis of the following sessions:
“Resilience and Restoration of Coastal Ecosystems”
“Climate Health in Rural and Coastal Georgia”
“Okefenokee Destiny Screening and Peatland Carbon at Risk”
“Afternoon Plenary: Advancing Equity in Drawdown Georgia Solutions.”
In conclusion, she noted that "climate action" and "sustainable cities and communities" emerged as the most frequent SDGs.
