Professor Dunham-Jones is having a good day!
What does it feel like to lecture to 40 of Atlanta's future leaders all holding copies of our book? Best holiday present ever! Thank you CFL!!
Professor Dunham-Jones couldn't be more proud of contributing in a small way to helping the next generation of young Ukrainian women prepare to rebuild their cities and towns. Looks like they liked it!
🎨 використовуючи тільки фарбу, можна переоформити міський простір: позначити перехрестя, аби зробити їх більш видимими для водіїв та безпечнішими для пішоходів; виділяти дворики чи майданчики кав’ярень, що зробить їх привабливішими;
🌿 рослинні графіті (наприклад, з моху) додадуть містам зелені, яка допомагає нам розслабитись;

Professor Ellen Dunham-Jones is deeply honored to help teenage Ukrainian girls prepare to rebuild their cities.

Change the house, change the city? The American Dream of ownership of a detached single-family house is increasingly under attack. It has a racist history and ongoing legacy of segregation, a high environmental footprint, fosters sprawl and loneliness in ever-smaller households, and is increasingly unaffordable. Diana Lind, of the Penn Institute for Urban Research and author of Brave New Home: Our Future in Smarter, Simpler, Happier Housing, Ellen Dunham-Jones and Andrew Bruno of Georgia Tech will discuss the impact on cities and neighborhoods of both exclusive single-family house zoning and alternative forms of houses/housing. Old Town Mall — Reimagined 2023 Competition
The Old Town Mall, the long abandoned outdoor pedestrian retail mall in the heart of Baltimore’s "Black Butterfly", is the site of our 2023 competition. Centering on benefit to the neighborhood, students are challenged to redevelop the four-block, 16-acre parcel. Designers will explore new programs for the site, study preservation vs. demolition options, evaluate public vs. private uses, and propose methods for engaging the community.

Lock-downs, work from home, and fears of crowded indoor space during the pandemic have shifted how many of us use streets. From “streateries” and street racing, to drive-by birthday parades and outdoor schools, our streets have become significantly more social. Will these shifts last if and when the pandemic eases – and what do they mean for public space, transit, and mode-splits? Professor Vikas Mehta, architecture and urban design at the University of Cincinnati, Tony Garcia of Street Plans Collaborative and Tactical Urbanism fame, and Professor Kari Watkins, civil engineering at Georgia Tech will help us figure it out. How can design be a bridge from good ideas to meaningful policy solutions? As we anticipate the next wave of devices and systems that will enhance our daily lives and well-being, there is a need to pause and consider the impact of technology on inequality. Designer and qualitative researcher Dr. Christina Harrington will discuss community-based approaches to design for equity and inclusion. In her research, she uses design to explore constructs of empowerment and access among communities that have been marginalized along multiple dimensions of identity (age, race, ethnicity, income, class). She will talk about ways to employ design as a catalyst for health equity and socially responsible technology experiences. From thinking about the most authentic ways of engaging with communities that are typically neglected to interrogating the ethics of technology as a solution. Come learn how Tech students and policymakers can think about design as a tool for solving social problems!

Together Webinar: Autonomous Aerotropolis: "A Digital Twin Model for Enhancing Smart and Connected Communities"
Thursday, March 4th at Noon
Lack of connectivity between jobs and affordable housing has a significant impact on regional economic development. The Brookings Institution ranked Atlanta 91st out of the largest 100 metro areas in terms of share of accessible jobs via public transit, and the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) found that there was a spatial mismatch of jobs and housing in the metro region and further has included Hartsfield as one of the regional centers. With focus on Atlanta’s Aerotropolis, this webinar will spotlight research by Georgia Tech’s College of Design and School of Aerospace Engineering on how to bridge the spatial mismatch between low-income employees at the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport and the broader Aerotropolis Atlanta Community Improvement Districts (AACIDs) through improved public transportation. An overview of this unique collaboration and its outcomes, as the result of fostering partnerships with community stakeholders (such as the AACIDs, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, MARTA, and members of the surrounding municipalities) will be addressed.

Walter Hood is the Creative Director and Founder of Hood Design Studio in Oakland, California. Hood Design Studio is a cultural practice, working across art, fabrication, design, landscape, research and urbanism. He is also the David K. Woo Chair and the Professor of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at the University of California, Berkeley. He lectures on and exhibits professional and theoretical projects nationally and internationally. He was recently the Spring 2020 Diana Balmori Visiting Professor at the Yale School of Architecture.
Walter creates urban spaces that resonate with and enrich the lives of current residents while also honoring communal histories. Hood melds architectural and fine arts expertise with a commitment to designing ecologically sustainable public spaces that empower marginalized communities. Over his career, he has transformed traffic islands, vacant lots, and freeway underpasses into spaces that challenge the legacy of neglect of urban neighborhoods. Through engagement with community members, he teases out the natural and social histories as well as current residents’ shared patterns and practices of use and aspirations for a place.
The Studio’s award-winning work has been featured in publications including Dwell, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Fast Company, Architectural Digest, Places Journal, and Landscape Architecture Magazine. Walter Hood is also a recipient of the 2017 Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award, 2019 Knight Foundation Public Spaces Fellowship, 2019 MacArthur Fellowship and 2019 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize.
