Randal Roark & Michael Dobbins | Atlanta History Center The summer of 1996. In nineteen days, six million visitors jostled about in a southern city grappling with white flight, urban decay and the stifling legacy of Jim Crow. Six years earlier, a bold, audacious partnership of a strong mayor, enlightened business leaders and Atlanta’s Black political l...

Their expertise in transportation and infrastructure has come up a number of times in the last few weeks as Congress has debated the infrastructure package. As members of a global community, we are horrified by the recent attacks on the members of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities across the country. While these attacks have been escalating over the past year, the senseless murders of eight individuals in Atlanta, including six Asian women, have been especially difficult for us who call Atlanta home. We mourn with the families of the victims. We express solidarity with all who have spoken out against racial and ethnic hate while pushing back on the insidious expressions of white supremacy.
Last summer, we took a stand against racial injustices perpetrated on the BIPOC communities and adopted our plan to advance "our commitment to justice and inclusive communities." We committed ourselves to do more to create an environment that nurtures, respects, and celebrates diverse voices and experiences.
Our work isn’t over yet. We must continue our efforts to expand equity, justice, and security to all communities. We must work to stop racial/ethnic hate, bigotry, and discrimination in our society and beyond.
