Atlanta, will this time be the charm? We've been calling for the adaptive use of this building for over 20 years now.

Great story.
Next month, the home of Joseph and Lillian Eichler will hit the market in Atherton, California, and the news already has people wondering what the prospective buyer will value more: architectural preservation or the land. Built in 1951, the home was the first custom Eichler ever built and also Eichler's first project working with the architects Anshen and Allen, who defined what made an Eichler home an "Eichler."

Paces Ferry Tower was designed by architect James C. Wise. When it opened it 1951, it offered units "in the heart of Buckhead" for $75/month, including all utilities.😎 A restaurant with live musical performances, the Jezebel Lounge, a salon, and offices are just some of the tenants that have occupied portions of the lobby floor over the years. As one of the earliest examples of the Modern high-rise apartment building that would come to define Buckhead during the mid-20th century, Docomomo GA celebrates this building's recent listing in the National Register of Historic Places and rehabilitation into hotel usage using historic preservation tax incentives!
What is New Formalism?
Docomomo US includes a good definition and the New Georgia Encyclopedia summarizes the style in an overview of Modern architecture in Georgia (link in comments).
Georgia examples worth noting: Muscogee County Courthouse (Edward W. Neal, 1970), in Columbus and the Atlanta Civic Center (Robert and Company, 1968). The Muscogee Courthouse site is being reconsidered as part of a new Judicial Building project and the Atlanta Civic Center as part of a new multi-use development (links in comments).

The Case for Saving Postmodernism, Architecture’s Wildest Buildings Many of the playful designs in the 1980s and ’90s in the US and UK are now aging and threatened with demolition. Can these architectural oddities be preserved?

Talking Docomomo with Midcentury Atlanta at Design Within Reach! Tour tomorrow.
We've been watching this complex- and wondering what's next. Will the Atlanta Housing Authority take the recent rehabilitation of the United Methodist Center (now the Revival Lofts), directly across the intersection of Ralph McGill and Peidmont, as a model for the awesome potential that a preserved, revitalized Civic Center holds, as they've publicly promised?🤞🏻
Future of Atlanta Civic Center's iconic auditorium remains unclear - Atlanta Civic Circle The once celebrated performing arts center—famous for its 4,600-seat auditorium and infamous for replacing a poor Black neighborhood called Buttermilk Bottom—has been sitting idle since 2014.

Downtown Atlanta building on Alabama Street nears transformation - Atlanta Business Chronicle A 76-year-old building in bad shape is poised to become a mixed-use project near MARTA's Five Points station. Atlanta officials are wrapping up the process of assembling the land for it.
We're so excited to see this complex rehabilitated and headed to the Georgia National Register Review Board in October!
Constructed in 1966 as the administrative headquarters of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church, the attached tower and 12-sided chapel were designed by Atlanta's own Finch, Alexander, Barnes, Rothschild, and Paschal (FABRAP), described as one of the city's most progressive design firms of the mid-20th century. The former office tower has been reborn amd recently opened as housing after long-term vacancy. Awesome to see new life for Modern landmarks!
Check out this upcoming presentation on the United Methodist Center in Atlanta, currently undergoing rehabilitation and being listed in the National Register of Historic Places. What a Modern preservation win!
From Vacant to Revival: Braden Fellman's Latest Adaptive Reuse.
Join us Thursday, July 28 at 6:30pm at the Atlanta Preservation Center to hear from leaders of the Braden Fellman Group as they share about one of their latest projects. They'll take a deep dive into the adaptive reuse of the United Methodist Center into the Revival Lofts. Learn the history of this building, why they chose it, and why preservation matters.
Built in 1964/1965, the former United Methodist Center sat dormant for nearly 20 years before being purchased by Braden Fellman in 2020. The property is an excellent example of a modern building designed by the renowned Atlanta architectural firm of Finch, Alexander, Barnes, Rothschild, and Paschal (FABRAP). Braden Fellman has led efforts to list the property on the National Register of Historic Places and rehabilitatie the space utilizing historic tax credits.
This event is free but we ask that you kindly register in advance. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/from-vacant-to-revival-learn-about-braden-fellmans-latest-adaptive-reuse-tickets-379991985257?aff=ebdsoporgprofile
