Kemma Filby (‘17) has recently been listed as one of the best screenwriters of 2023 on The Tracking Board! She is an actress, writer, and producer, as well as an adjunct professor for Screenwriting at APU. Filby graduated from APU as an Acting major with a minor in Screenwriting. João Castello is a freshman Cinematic Arts Production major with quite an impressive story! He has earned numerous awards globally for different films he has made, including but not limited to: Cannes World Film Festival (Best Young Filmmaker 2022), Toronto Independent Film Festival (Best International Feature Film 2022), Lift-Off Global Network (Best Picture 2024), Black Cat Award (Best Soundtrack 2022).

Our Theater Arts department puts so much time and effort into creating beautifully captivating experiences for their audiences, and their productions show it! The opening of Charley Friedman’s immersive auditory installation, Soundtracks for the Present Future, was a huge success! There was an impressive turnout to see the gallery, as well as to listen to Charley Friedman’s artist lecture!

Anna D***s ‘24 has had the exciting opportunity of being a Fashion Public Relations Intern at Michele Marie PR in Los Angeles for the past summer and throughout the current fall semester. Our Chambers Singers are participating in a competition tour to Ireland & Wales this summer, and they would appreciate your support to get them there with a small donation for the show. Two weeks until our biggest event of the year at Warner Bros! The COTA industry spotlight featureswork from students across our arts programs, including Theater's senior showcase, the premiere of student films, Artist Alley, and live music. We can't wait to celebrate all your hard work!

In March, the High School Choral Festival returned with over 700 participating students from choirs all over SoCal. World-renowned choral conductor, Dr. Anton Armstrong, coached each group and spent some time working with our choral conducting majors. Special thanks to Prof. Michelle Jensen and the APU Chamber Singers for coordinating and hosting!

This weekend the APU Opera presents the opera, “Marilyn Forever,” with music by British composer Gavin Bryars. The opera is a psychological look in how a person searches for hope and acceptance (sometimes in the wrong places). Join us for free on Saturday or Sunday at Munson Chapel on East Campus!

APU's hosted the 2023 Angeles Worship Summit a couple of weeks ago, bringing together participants from over 60 churches to worship and engage in artistic training and theological formation.

Over the weekend, a group of our animation students was able to attend the Annie Awards, the animation industry's biggest award show, as talent hosts. They were there alongside those pictured in the third slide, directors Henry Selick, Domee Shi, Jorge Gutierrez, Jennifer Nelson.

Jordan Dykstra ’03 is the composer of the documentary 20 Days in Mariupol, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last month. The documentary covers the beginning of the Ukraine/Russia conflict in Mariupol, Ukraine, and has received praise from critics and the media.

We’re excited to welcome mixed media artist Alicia Piller to campus for an Artist Talk on Friday, February 10th at 1:30pm in DARL 413, West Campus. An exhibition of her work presented by the Department of Art will be on display in the Duke Arts Hallway as a part of our celebration of Black History Month. We invite you to join Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, February 5th at 7:30pm in Munson Chapel, celebrating Black History Month with their performance of composer Margaret Bonds’ “Montgomery Variations.” Their first concert of the semester also features cello professor Marek Szpakiewicz performing Lalo’s “Cello Concerto” and Mozart’s “Symphony No. 40.” See the poster for more information.
