Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture

A non-profit organization & gallery committed to creating a forum for contemporary visual art

A year ago Tom Stoner, a visionary philanthropist who made this special park at UMBC possible, left this world. Today we honor and celebrate the beauty he created through the nationwide network of Sacred Places, like the one here at UMBC.

Hear how the project began in Tom’s own words recorded in 2021 for the Joseph Beuys Tree Partnership Oral History Collection at cadvc.umbc.edu/oral-history-collection.

The room is totally abuzz at ’s Titus Theater as we prepare to celebrate ’s “Unseen Truth” snd .berger’s “Race Stories” in a packed Forum on Contemporary Photography dedicated to the subject “Democracy, Race, and the Power of Images.”

Here scholar, curator, and friend to CADVC Marvin Heiferman poses with a freshly printed (and totally beautiful) volume of Maurice Berger’s Race Stories essays. Dr. Berger was chief curator and research professor at the Center for Art, Design, and Visual Culture until his untimely death in 2020, following a decades long career at UMBC.

On December 5, 2024, CADVC will honor Maurice Berger’s legacy, and this new book from and , with a special event. More information: https://aperture.org/press-release/aperture-releases-race-stories-maurice-berger/ Watch this space for registration details!

About the CADVC

The Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture began in 1989 as the Fine Arts Gallery of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The establishment of the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture—founded in 2003—represented the culmination of a twelve-year effort to expand upon the gallery’s original mission of presenting exhibitions and public programs. The Center has broadened the mandate of the Fine Arts Gallery to bring it into line with the wide-ranging, humanities-based mission of UMBC as a Research Institution and Honors University. Historically, the Fine Arts Gallery has served as the university’s principal exhibition space—a forum for students, professors, and staff, as well as the general public to experience contemporary visual culture and to dialogue about important cultural

and aesthetic issues.

The Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture (CADVC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to organizing comprehensive exhibitions, the publication of catalogs, CDs, DVDs, and books on the arts, and educational and community outreach projects. The Center’s programs serve as a forum for exploring the social and aesthetic issues of the day. The Center is committed to rethinking the relationship between art institutions and the public, placing special emphasis on:

-Well-written, viewer-friendly catalogs and accessible gallery interpretation
