Despite Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry’s request that universities strip scholarships from college athletes who are not present during the national anthem, LSU will not be changing its football pregame tradition.
“There will not be any changes to our pre-game football processes this season,” LSU athletics spokesman Zach Greenwell said in a statement to the Illuminator.
Landry spokesperson Kate Kelly declined to comment on LSU’s decision.
Landry made the request to all four of Louisiana’s higher education systems in April after the LSU women’s basketball team was not on the court for the “Star Spangled Banner” before its NCAA Tournament game with Iowa. Video that showed Iowa’s team on the court but not LSU went viral on social media, mostly fueled by conservative accounts.

An executive order preventing the use of Critical Race Theory in Louisiana’s K-12 public education system has been signed by Gov. Jeff Landry, his office announced on Tuesday morning, Aug. 27.
According to the governor’s office, “Critical Race Theory (CRT) includes divisive teachings that instruct students to view life through the lens of race and victimhood. Governor Landry believes students should be learning about American exceptionalism and the principles embodied in State and Federal Constitutions of the United States of America that recognize the equal value of every individual.”
“This executive order is a much-needed sigh of relief for parents and students across our state, especially as kids are heading back to school,” said Landry. “Teaching children that they are currently or destined to be oppressed or to be an oppressor based on their race and origin is wrong and has no place in our Louisiana classrooms. I am confident that under Dr. Brumley’s leadership our education system will continue to head in the right direction, prioritizing American values and common-sense teachings.”

Sunday Inspiration: Embrace the Journey of Expungement
Good morning and happy Sunday! Today, let’s reflect on the beauty of renewal and the transformative power of expungement. This isn’t just about clearing a record; it’s about reclaiming your life, your dreams, and your future.
Every step you take towards expungement is a step towards a brighter tomorrow. It’s about shedding the shadows of the past and stepping into the light of new opportunities. No matter what your history looks like, you have the power to redefine your future.
Here’s why expungement is more than just a legal process:
Renewal: Just as seasons change, bringing new life and growth, expungement allows for a personal renewal, clearing the path for fresh beginnings.
Opportunity: With a clean slate, the world opens up in ways you might not have thought possible. New job prospects, housing opportunities, and the chance to pursue your passions become more accessible.
Healing: Letting go of the past is an essential step in healing. Expungement is a powerful tool for moving forward with confidence and peace.
Hope: Hope is the seed from which all dreams grow. By pursuing expungement, you plant the seeds of hope for a future filled with possibilities.
Gratitude: Be thankful for the journey that has brought you to this point. Every challenge has made you stronger, and expungement is a testament to your resilience.
This Sunday, take a moment to appreciate how far you’ve come and how much further you can go. If you’re considering expungement, know that you’re not alone on this journey. Reach out for guidance and support, and take that first step towards the life you’ve always envisioned.
May today be the start of som**hing beautiful.

Experts weigh in on two guns being found at two different East Baton Rouge high schools BATON ROUGE - After deputies recovered two weapons from East Baton Rouge Parish Public School students on Thursday, gun experts talked to WBRZ about the incident.
A man is accused of harassing a bus driver and parents who were dropping off their kids around 6:20 a.m. at North Leighton Drive and North Afton Parkway on Monday, Aug. 19 and Tuesday, Aug. 20. He also threatened to shoot the bus driver, the Baton Rouge Police Department said.
Duane Landry, 67, of Baton Rouge, was charged with intimidation and interference in the operation of schools, unlawful disruption of the operation of a school; penalties, aggravated assault with a firearm, firearm free zone; notice; signs, and wearing or possessing body armor, by a student or non-student on school property.
BRPD said after arriving at the scene, they found Landry who was “wearing body armor with three rifle magazines on the front, with a smaller revolver in his front waistband, another firearm strapped to his thigh with the hammer cocked back and a spare magazine next to it, a knife on the front of his vest, a machete style blade in a sheathe on the front left side of his vest, and a can of bear spray and flex cuffs as well,” according to the affidavit.
According to BRPD, Landry said he told the bus driver that she could not block the intersection with the bus. He said he was a commissioner for the subdivision and could ask people to leave, BRPD said.
They said they did not have enough information at the time to press charges against Landry.
BRPD was able to gather more information in the form of statements from the bus driver and kids that were on her bus. Everyone said that Landry “threatened to shoot her, and that she closed the door to the bus on him due to him attempting to get on the bus,” according to the affidavit.
Some of the parents of the kids also corroborated what was said by the bus driver.
The Baton Rouge man was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Thursday, Aug. 22.
Mary Fields was born enslaved around 1832 and freed following the American Civil War. In 1895, Fields was hired as a mail carrier because she was the fastest applicant to hitch a team of six horses. Fields was the first African American woman, and only the second woman, to work in the United States Postal Service. She got her nickname stagecoach because she never missed a day of work, even showing up during heavy snow by wearing snowshoes and carrying the mail packs on her back.
Fields stood six feet tall, and was a woman who commanded attention. Legend has it she wore a 38 Smith & Weston strapped under her apron and could hit anything within 50 paces.
After quitting the mail route in 1901, Fields opened her own laundry and restaurant with the help of Mother Amadeus, the mother superior of an Ursuline convent in Toledo, Ohio.
