🚨 Tropical Storm Francine Update: University of Louisiana System Campus Closures 🚨

As Tropical Storm Francine approaches, several University of Louisiana System campuses are adjusting their operations to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff. Here are the current closure plans:
🔹 McNeese State University (Lake Charles): Closing at noon on Tuesday, September 10, and remaining closed through Wednesday, September 11.
🔹 University of Louisiana at Lafayette: Closing at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10, and remaining closed through Wednesday, September 11. Reopening at noon on Thursday, September 12.
🔹 Nicholls State University (Thibodaux): Closed from Wednesday, September 11, through Thursday, September 12. Virtual classes will resume on Friday, September 13.
🔹 Southeastern Louisiana University(Hammond): Shifting to remote operations at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10. The campus will be closed on Wednesday, September 11, and will resume normal operations at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 12.
🔹 University of New Orleans: Transitioning to remote operations and classes at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10. Closed on Wednesday, September 11, and reopening virtually on Thursday, September 12.
🔹 Northwestern State University (Natchitoches): Closed on Wednesday, September 11.

Campuses in northern Louisiana, including Grambling State University, Louisiana Tech University, and University of Louisiana Monroe, are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as decisions are made.

Thanks to Louisiana Tech University for hosting the Universities of Louisiana Academic Summit! This annual event showcases research, service learning, and the arts, uniting all nine UL System member institutions to foster collaboration and celebrate student excellence. It also provides a unique opportunity for students to acknowledge and express gratitude to their esteemed faculty mentors whose guidance and support have been instrumental in their academic journeys.

Gathering with our supporters under one roof last night allowed us to reflect on our efforts thus far and fuels our vision for the future of the University of Louisiana Maritime Academy. Thank you to all who attended and who continue to support this project.

Tonight, we're hosting an exclusive Maritime Academy reception, uniting lawmakers and industry experts to discuss the current landscape of maritime affairs and envision the future. Successfully responding to these challenges will require a diverse, multidisciplinary, and well-trained workforce. The higher education enterprise remains the primary vehicle for developing this workforce at scale.

In Louisiana, waterborne transportation is essential to virtually every industry sector concerned with moving products. The maritime industry is responsible for 1 in 5 jobs in Louisiana—45% more direct jobs than oil and gas—with significant future growth projections.

ULMA will partner with maritime training programs at the technical and community college level in Louisiana to provide additional educational pathways. In addition to the blue water found in oceans around the globe, ULMA will specialize in brown water—the native inland and coastal waters that are critical to so many states’ economies.

It's time for Louisianians with some college credit to reenroll to finish their degrees, and Compete LA is here to help. We work with students to ensure previously earned credits are not wasted.

Last week's Louisiana Board of Regents Trusteeship conference was a chance to celebrate 50 years of Regents and gather together higher education leaders from all corners of the state. President Gallot participated in a panel with other system presidents discussing the importance of our work and embracing technological advancement and workforce requirements.

Having an engaged Board of Supervisors with member dedicated to student success makes System-level work exciting. Thank you to Northwestern State University CENLA Campus for hosting us for Board development.

Students grow through service. Another great year for the Big Event!

Today's Academic Honors Network Baton Rouge event was truly inspiring! The University of Louisiana System awarded 25 scholarships to deserving future students. This event continues to flourish, and we're grateful to play a part in it!

Samuel Gil, a senior at McNeese State University, is Regents' current student Board member.

The Ville Platte native is majoring in mass communications with a concentration in public relations. He is currently in his second term as SGA President at McNeese.

After graduation in May, Regent Gil will head to The University of Texas at Austin where he plans to enroll in the LBJ School of Public Affairs for his master's degree in public affairs.
