As we tap into the lively energy of the Wood Dragon, it’s vital to remember the possible health concerns that could emerge during this spirited year. The Wood Dragon’s dynamic yang energy drives us towards action and personal growth. However, this boost can sometimes cause us to push ourselves too far. Practices like meditation, tai chi, or spending time outdoors can be very effective in calming the quick-tempered nature that comes with the wood element.
Regular movement is essential to keep Wood energy flowing. Aim to engage in regular exercise which will help prevent stagnation leading to digestive complaints. Similar be cautious of overeating as congested digestion can impair the movement of Wood energy. Include in this the information and emotions you digest, maintaining mindfulness of what you listen to, watch and read.

Happy Autumn Equinox ! Autumn marks the beginning of the yin cycle when the daylight lasts less than 12 hours. The yang of summer surrenders itself to the growing yin energy of the approaching winter. After summer, autumn is a time to clear overactive yang from the body in the form of rest and more quiet time, and then as the temperatures drop, the time will come to start warming the body against extremes. The summer is associated with the fire element and the autumn is associated with the metal element. In Chinese Medicine, the lung and the colon are the internal organs related to the metal element and to autumn. The lungs are very closely associated with the immune system and control the circulation of the Wei-Qi (the protective Qi) which is the defensive Qi that protects the body from external attacks by viruses like colds and flu. A weakness in the lungs can lead to a weakness in the Wei-Qi, making you prone to frequent colds. Focus on strengthening your lungs and gently eliminating toxins from the colon. It’s a wonderful time do to a gentle Ayurvedic cleanse. Take walks in the changing of the leaves and breathe in that cool prana filled air. Time to start eating heartier soups and stews with moderately pungent spices and less cooling and raw foods! Having a acupuncture tune up is one of the best ways to prepare yourself for the transition into Fall! We still
have some availability for patients next week Devi Acupuncture and Ayurveda🙏🏽🍀🍁🍂🕉☯️

These last two weeks have been such a rollercoaster, and you accommodated my situation so well. I also think you're absolute magic. The day after our initial cervical ripening session, I definitely felt different, Braxton hicks and all . After our second session, I started seeing parts of the mucus plug/bloody show. And after our third session, my water broke! Labor started , and after 5-7 hours, I birthed my baby naturally with no pain meds! And no pitocin! I will definitely be back very soon for some healing, postpartum acupuncture. ♥️”

Ayurveda uses herbs and spices in food as a form of both medicine and nutrition.

Spices are commonly used to help correct acute and chronic conditions by eliminating metabolic toxins. Many of the spices used in Indian cooking help detoxify the body, improve agni (digestive fire), and boost immunity.

Herbs such as ginger, black pepper, long pepper, cinnamon, coriander and turmeric are used for their culinary delight as well as their vast healing properties. Spices like cumin, fennel and peppermint are often used as antacids, neutralizing the acid produced by the stomach, to maintain the alkalinity and the healthy microbiome needed for proper digestion.

Anti-inflammatory and antibiotic herbs like turmeric are useful in inhibiting the growth of germs, harmful microbes and bacteria. In addition to their highly aromatic properties, saffron, cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom are also great astringents which help digest fats and reduce free radicals in the body.

The most commonly used spices are turmeric, cumin, coriander, fennel, mint, asafoetida (hing), black pepper, dried powdered ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cayenne. These are among the most potent Ayurvedic spices that enhance digestion and metabolism, cleanse ama (toxins) from the body, and help prevent digestive disorders such as gas and bloating.

Many of these spices are used all over the world. There are additionally many spices not commonly used in India which are used throughout the world with culinary application and medicinal value. Some of the main western herbs with potent therapeutic qualities include basil, thyme, dill, oregano, rosemary, parsley, sage, paprika, mint, marjoram, chives and tarragon.

Properties of the Top Ten Ayurvedic Spices:

1. Turmeric

Turmeric is the single most researched herb in the world. Turmeric has virtually unlimited useful therapeutic qualities, including: anti-oxidant, anti-tumor/anti cancerous, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-hyperlipidemia, and insect repellent effects. It is widely used to heal wounds and cuts. The one contraindication of turmeric can be if you are taking prescription blood thinners, as it can slightly thin the blood when used in large quantities.

2. Ginger

Ginger is the second most researched herb. Ginger is considered the single best herb for digestion and the safest to consume during pregnancy. It helps break down proteins relieving the stomach and intestines of gas and aiding digestion of fatty foods.

Its warming quality improves and stimulates circulation and relaxes the muscles surrounding blood vessels, facilitating the flow of blood throughout the body. It has been widely shown to prevent as well as treat motion sickness, relax the stomach and relieve the feeling of nausea.

Studies show it can help reduce the levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol in the body, reducing the risk of developing heart disease.

3. Cumin

Cumin is a powerful digestive aid. Medicinally it has shown beneficial mutagenic and blood-clotting effects. Other effects include: estrogenic, antispasmodic, diuretic, aphrodisiac, carminative, simulative, and analgesic.

4. Coriander

Coriander seeds are another great digestive aide which can reduce acidity and inflammation. They are a great remedy for many Pitta disorders, particularly those of the digestive tract or urinary system.

The juice of coriander leaf has been shown to stimulate secretion of gastric juices, and as such is useful as a carminative and spasmolytic agent. Ayurveda uses it for digestive and gastric complaints, chest pain, upper abdominal pain, bladder infections, rashes associated with leprosy, fever, dysentery, and as an external poultice for headache.

5. Saffron

Saffron is usually used in small amounts. Besides it being very expensive it is also quite strong. It helps to increase appetite, reduces indigestion, diarrhea, vomiting, and acidity. It acts as a cardiac tonic and is used to treat diseases which originate from vitiation of blood. It helps in easy flow of urine and hence is used in retention of urine. Saffron rejuvenates both the male and female reproductive system. It is also sattvic in nature and helps cool and focus the mind. It can be used in cooking or infused in water.

6. Clove

Cloves are pungent and aromatic, and are used in cooking as well as for therapeutic purposes.

Clove oil applied externally, has stimulating effects on the skin, producing heat and redness. Clove powder and oil are effective in treating fever, problems related to the head, nausea, hypertension, disorders of the nose, sore gums, toothache, earache, chest pain, coughs, digestive problems, diarrhea, cholera, intestinal worms, arthritis, backache, blisters, boils, burns, sexual debility, and morning sickness in pregnancy. Overuse of clove can cause excess heat and can result in skin rash.

7. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is used in cooking worldwide. It is also used as an ancient home remedy for numerous conditions and diseases. In Ayurveda it is used for treating rheumatism and other inflammations. Cinnamon teas and extracts are active against Candida albicans, and also Helicobacter pylori, the bacterium responsible for stomach ulcers. Clinical studies have also shown that cinnamon can inhibit the growth of cultured tumor cells. It is also useful as a food preservative to inhibit the growth of common food-borne bacteria such as Salmonella and E coli.

8. Fennel

Fennel seed is another tasty digestive herb. It has been shown to stimulate gastrointestinal motility and has demonstrated an antispasmodic effect in higher concentrations.

Fennel seeds are considered one of the most balanced and sattvic of all spices. They are one of the best herbs for digestion, strengthen agni without aggravating pitta, stop cramping and dispel flatulence.

One-teaspoon of roasted seeds can be taken after meals, by themselves or with rock salt. They combine well with cumin and coriander as three cooling spices. Fennel seeds are excellent for digestive weakness in children or in the elderly.

They are calming to the nerves. Their aroma acts upon the mind and promotes mental alertness. For urinary problems, they combine well with coriander. Fennel can be used for digestive weakness where hot spices and peppers might overheat or over stimulate.

9. Nutmeg

Nutmeg is commonly called Jaiphal, or Jatiphala. Nutmeg alleviates kapha and vata dosha. It helps reduce convulsions, pain and inflammation because of its hot potency. It also helps clear the respiratory passage and normalizes the digestive system. Caution: Do Not take in excess. In large quantities it has psychotropic properties.

10. Ajwain (Carom seeds)

Ajwain has been in Ayurveda since time immemorial for cooking and medicine. It is often used as a carminative medicine. Ajwain water, from boiling the seeds, is a cure for flatulence, indigestion & low appetite. This water is a household medicine not only in south India but also in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and even in some Arabian countries.

“Wishing everyone a very Happy 2023 Chinese New Year - Happy Year of the Yin Water Rabbit ... 兔年快樂 … 🎏🎊🧧🎉🧧🎏 ! Gong Xi Fa Cai / Gong Hey Fat Choi / 恭喜发财 🎏🎉🧧🎊 🧧🎏!
As we approach the Lunar New Year (Jan 22 '23 this year), be kind to yourself as you move out of the ferocious Year of the Tiger that was. We went through the wringer in more ways than one, and perhaps worse than 2020-21. So in this last month as we transition to the Year of the Water Rabbit, take a moment and reflect on what was 2022 and give yourself grace if you are still reeling from the turbulent times that was and acknowledge that you did the best you could for you and your family. Take time now then to be kind to yourself and transition yourself physically, mentally and spiritually to welcome in the gentle, sweet energy of the peaceful Water Rabbit.

According to the Chinese Horoscope, following an eventful and regenerating period dominated by the Tiger, the advent of the Year of the Water Rabbit is a harbinger of gentleness and serenity. Since it is a sober year with an indolent rhythm that begins, rest, truce, and intellectual challenges become the main dynamics of this Lunar New Year ruled by the Rabbit. So both individually and collectively, it’s time to heal wounds, reacquire inner balance and make plans for the future. It’s important to show tolerance in the face of possible affronts that one may suffer while remaining lucid and alert in the face of his own sudden desires.

The Rabbit (Mao) is the fourth earthly branch of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals. It represents prospering, growing, and expanding energy. According to Master Wu “the oracle script for Mao looks like an opening gate, which represents the earth opening its door for everything to grow.” (Wu, 2014, p.115). Humanity realizes its true nature and flows, cognizant of its authenticity, down the path of life. The new year begins on January 22nd and the rabbit emerges on February 4th.

Each year, Chinese cosmology consists of three aspects: one of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals, one of the five-elements, and either yin or yang. These three aspects provide information about the energetics of the year and contribute to guiding a person in making choices. This year, like last year, is represented by water setting on top of wood.
Rabbit represents the month of March and the time 5am to 7am, when animals emerge from their caves and wag their tails in the warm spring air. Powerful qi builds, expanding with new life energy. Rabbit is associated with the wood element, the color green, and the cardinal direction east. Personality traits include wisdom, ambition, skill, secrecy, and vitality. Rabbits run fast but also take time to rest and display gentleness. Rabbits live in dens, hidden securely underground, allowing them to restore their lively energy. They possess great strategic qualities and know when to act or retreat, thus 2023 holds awesome potential for putting a plan into action.
The nimble nature of rabbit empowers us to maneuver around any obstacles that arise in 2023. There can be old patterns or belief systems that hold you back and the rabbit’s agility enables you to let go of these and just do it! Fortunately, rabbits are not risk-takers or fighters, and their cautious nature allows you to move forward with care and cultivate progress while considering of all various outcomes. The doors are open, and growth is quick.

Water is the element of the year and is traditionally associated with the color black, thus 2023 is called a Black Rabbit year. 2022 also featured the water element which fed the wood nature of the tiger (water is the mother of wood). Rabbit is also in the wood family, making the wood aspect especially strong this year. The nature of water is to flow and accept changes. It provides us with great endurance and supports the active, expanding energy of 2023. Water is associated with mystical energy, which continues the emphasis on the magical aspects of life such as astrology, fengshui, and other mystical arts that we saw in 2022. Last year many of us experienced heightened emotions due to water’s ability to hold a lot of emotion, since it absorbs and resonates. This year also brings more emotionality and there often can be surges of fear which can overwhelm the wood energy, creating inaction. This would be like the flooding of a forest. Take care to manage emotion by connecting to the earth and bringing grounding qi to daily life which controls the emotion of water.

Yin is symbolized by resting, nighttime, moon, female, retreat, et al. This helps to balance the active wood element and harmonize the energy of the year. Yin represents Mother Earth and feelings of safety, being held, and nurtured, which allows us to navigate the expanding growth of 2023 with an inner stillness. Yin water is the most yin, signifying gentleness, softness, and the ability to surmount hardness. It provides a strong spiritual connection and allows us to tune into the wisdom of the universe. Yin water grants us the means to quiet the mind, make a tidal shift, and ultimately distance ourselves from past decisions to create a new trajectory which hopefully includes fulfilling our obligation to make an offering to the human family. This resonates with the compassionate personality of the rabbit, which is yin wood.

The rabbit represents strong life energy and an expansion of self. It symbolizes the time 5am to 7am, which is a wonderful time to cultivate energy, thus this year signifies transformation and a thriving qi. The thunder associated with 2023 generates strong liver qi which combines with the yang metal to make metal energy. Breathing techniques to build vital energy are recommended such as ‘box breathing’ (breathing slowly, evenly, deeply, smoothly through the nose only in four second segments: in, hold, out, hold). 2023 brings visions and connects us with the mystery of life. These visions allow us to develop great strategies to make wise decisions while letting go of those belief systems that no longer serve our highest good.

Frustrations can arise that overwhelm digestion, so take care to not overeat or drink in excess. Manage your liver energy through exercise like swimming and let your hun (ethereal soul) fly freely by allowing your spirit to soar by following your dreams. This ensures a strong defensive system to ward off pathogens. Observing these suggestions prevents digestive issues like constipation, food cravings, and stomach problems. Since this year is yin water, your kidneys need extra rest. Rejuvenate your energy through napping and getting eight hours of sleep to avoid edema, difficulty with mobility – especially walking – blood problems, low back pain, poor memory, decreased libido, and infertility. Essentially, 2023 is about seeking balance between action and repose. The Yin Water Rabbit gifts us with the ability to learn how to harmonize our qi and solidify our drive for navigating the forward momentum of the upcoming several years.

Increase consumption of steamed greens like kale and spinach. Introduce more sour and fermented foods. Adding two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar a day to veggies or warm water facilitates healthy liver and digestive functions

Yin Water Rabbit – we can delve deeper and gain insights from the earthly branches. Each Chinese animal is associated with an earthly branch which represents an organ, an acupuncture channel, and a weather pattern. Rabbit is associated with the liver organ, the large intestine channel, and the yang ming (dryness) weather pattern.

The liver governs the tendons. With all the activity expected in 2023, repetitive injuries might frequently occur. Take care to nourish tendons by eating more protein, taking omega3 supplements, and drinking plenty of water. The liver is also associated with courage and decision making and thus is paramount this year. You will be called to engage in life by advancing on your path, evolving into your truest self. Utilize the strategic nature of the year to make choices that benefit your ability to best serve humanity. Like a general on a battlefield, observe all the possible options before selecting and moving forward with correct timing.

Large Intestine channel: The rabbit is associated with the time 5am to 7am which, as noted above, is an ideal time for cultivation such as qigong, yoga, breathing techniques, etc. This is the large intestine time and is symbolized by letting go. The large intestine moves downward while the liver rises. This combination is like the tai ji symbol depicting the dance of energy in the body. If these organs are healthy, the energy in the body flows harmoniously. Anger and resentment block this flow and can cause a myriad of problems, most notably respiratory distress, indigestion, constipation, headaches, and explosive tempers. Take care to flow with the changes in 2023 and let go of the past. A helpful visualization is to imagine breathing in clear, bright light universal energy through your lungs and all the pores of your skin, and breathing out the old energy, letting it dissipate into the earth.

Yang Ming: The weather pattern of 2023 is dryness. This can increase the likeliness of droughts and poor soil integrity. Since this year also is associated with yin water, there can be some balancing of energies. However, yang ming can still affect fluids in the environment and in our bodies. Dry skin, lips, bowels, and tissue will be more prevalent so strive to increase fluids.

According to Chinese Astrology, the Rabbit represents peaceful and patient energy. The Rabbit is a gentle creature known for thinking things through before acting. This energy will encourage us to approach challenges and opportunities calmly and rationally.

In addition to Rabbit’s peaceful energy, the Water element brings intuition and inner peace. Water is all about tapping into our inner wisdom and trusting our instincts. It encourages us to be more in tune with our emotions and sensitive to those around us.
But the Water Rabbit isn’t just all about peace and harmony. It is also said to bring good luck and unexpected opportunities. You must take advantage of this by being open to new possibilities and not being afraid to take risks. This is a lucky year for men, so be ready to embrace the unexpected and see where it takes you!
This combination of energies may lead to a more harmonious and peaceful year. The Water Rabbit encourages us to focus on relationships and to work on building bridges instead of walls. This is a good year for diplomacy and communication, which will be helpful for both personal and professional relationships.

As we move into the Year of the Water Rabbit, let’s embrace the energies of patience, intuition, and good luck. Trust in our inner wisdom and take things one step at a time. With a little bit of the Rabbit’s gentle determination and the Water flow, we can accomplish great things in 2023!
The Year of the Water Rabbit is very positive, full of opportunities and good luck. It’s the perfect time to focus on building strong relationships and finding inner peace.

May the Year of the Water Rabbit bring you much outer and inner peace, prosperity and good luck!! “

This is a great time to get your Qi/Prana flowing ! If you would like to book an Acupuncture and Ayurvedic treatment we still have some availability for next week!
