Summer is represented by the fire element, a symbol of heat and transformation. Understanding the fire element and its influence can help us harness its energy and bring more joy into our lives.

Fire, the most Yang of the five elements in TCM represents expansion, activity, and light. It is characterized by joy, enthusiasm, and a sense of connection, reflecting the vibrant and sociable nature of summer.

Fire's corresponding organs are Heart (yin) and Small Intestine (yang). The heart and small intestine are the “guardians'' of summer health.

Like fire radiating warmth and light, when the heart and small intestine are in balance, one experiences vital energy, creativity, and a deep sense of well-being. Joy uplifts the spirit and enhances life’s outlook. This positive attitude creates a feedback loop that enhances immunity, increases lifespan, deepens sleep, and and lowers stress levels.

My love for peonies extend beyond their beauty. It is a medicinal plant that I have found to be essential in my own healing as well many of the patients that I treat.

The root of the Chinese peony flower is called "Bai Shao" (白芍) and in the TCM material medica, it belongs to the category of Blood tonics.

Peony root can nourish Blood, regulate the Liver, calm anxiety, and alleviate pain. It contains active compounds, such as paeoniflorin and albiflorin that contribute to its anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and immunomodulatory effects.

The inclusion of Peony root is one of the reasons that Dr. Anna Gold Balance Tincture is so effective at relieving stress and anxiety.

The Wood element symbolizes growth, flexibility, and the upward movement of energy, mirroring the emergence of new life in nature. The Liver and organs are believed to govern the smooth flow of (vital energy) throughout the body, as well as the regulation of emotions, vision, and decision-making processes.

The is considered to be particularly susceptible to imbalances during the spring season. Excessive stress, poor dietary habits, and stagnant energy can impede the smooth flow of Liver Qi, leading to a range of physical and emotional symptoms such as irritability, frustration, and digestive issues.

In both Western and Eastern traditions, springtime is associated with the concepts of cleansing and detoxification. In , this idea is reflected in the importance of supporting the body's natural detoxification processes. To support the Liver during this time, incorporate bitter and sour foods into your diet, such as dark leafy greens like kale and arugula, citrus fruits, and vinegar. Dandelion, kale, arugula and vegetables are a major source of glutathione, which releases enzymes that help the liver detoxify. Ask yourself: “What do I need to feel restored?”

I have been asking myself this question since the Winter Solstice.

As we cross the threshold into a new year, there is pressure to start anew. Our tradition to make resolutions promotes a sense of restlessness and anxiety.

What if I give you permission to rest? Let me propose an alternative to the busy to-do lists of New Year resolutions. Winter should be about honoring repose and respite. It is the season for turning inward.

As microcosms of the Universe, our bodies want to sync with the world around us. When Winter arrives, cold and darkness restrict activities. When Nature slows down, your body and mind also want to pause. By honoring that feeling, you follow the body’s natural inclination. By doing so, you have access to resources on a profound level. Following Nature’s rhythm can recharge you with resounding energy and prepare you for when the Light returns and the Earth turns again toward the Yang.

Posted • One of the highlights of our work at Marie Veronique is Beyond Topical, the ongoing series of conversations we have with leaders in various fields about factors that influence skin health. Each of these exceptional minds also happens to be an authentic Marie Veronique user, so we asked for their favorite product picks from the line.

Today we’re pleased to feature Dr. Anna Gold, Doctor of East Asian Medicine. “I am loving the new Body Barrier Emulsion. It softens my skin differently than other oils and lotions. The moisture in this bottle penetrates deeper, as opposed to feeling like it’s sitting on top of the skin. And, unlike a body oil that I need to wait to be absorbed, my skin drinks in this cream almost immediately. I can feel it creating a protective barrier layer. It feels cozy and soft, like my favorite cashmere sweater.”

Autumn is the season when the world feels like it's in transition. Daylight shortens and darkness lengthens. Here in northern California where I live, the temperature fluctuates weekly from warm to cold to mild and back to cold, as if Mother Nature is easing our bodies slowly into hibernation.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the fall season is associated with the metal element and by extension, the metal organs: Lungs and Large Intestine. Lungs and Large Intestines sift through substances to keep those that nourish and eliminate waste. The emotional aspect of the metal element is grief. Sometimes grief arises when change occurs, especially if we are facing loss, much like the transition from warm weather to winter frost.

Chinese Medicine teaches us ways to stay balanced and healthy during every season. When we align with the energy of Fall we are less prone to sickness and fatigue.

To find out more ways to support balance in your body and mind during this season read the full blog post here:

On January 22, 2023, we are transitioning from the year of the Yang Water Tiger to the year of a Yin Water Rabbit. Last year, the dynamic water Tiger was full of sprouting energy. It was lively, and sometimes aggressive and chaotic. Luckily, that volatility is shifting with the Lunar New Year.

Sharing a pic of my midday snack because so many of my patients tell me they don’t have time to prep healthy food during their busy work days. Olives, hummus, sprouted beans, a drizzle of olive oil, and watermelon radishes to scoop it all up. It’s high protein, plant based, gluten-free, and rich in omega-3s.

Eating whole foods instead of grabbing for chips or bars helps your body feel fuller longer, not to mention the benefits to your body and skin without all the additives.

What are some of your go-tos for easy quick snacking?
