The Ghassanid Kingdom
Jafna bin Amr founded the Ghassanid Kingdom in 220 AD, which was so named after a spring of water in Syria.

The Ghassanid kings ruled over a considerable part of northwestern Arabia, lower Syria, and Hijaz. The capital of the Kingdom was the city of Balka until the second Harith, when it was supplanted by Petra and Sideir.

The Ghassanid kings always looked upon the Romans as their best and most powerful defenders and protectors against the expansion desires of the Sassanian dynasty of Persia. Towards the third and fourth centuries of the Christian Era, the Ghassanid kings formed a confederation with other tribes powerful enough to persuade the Roman Empire to form alliances and friendships with them to counterbalance the influence of the Mesopotamian Arabs of Hira, who were under Persian rule.

The First Christian Arabian Kingdom

In the Acts of the Apostles (6:1-6), it is said that the twelve Apostles chose seven men full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom and appointed them to serve as deacons (Eastern, 2008). The seven deacons were Nicanor, Stephen, Philip, Parmenas, Prochorus, Nicholas, and Timon.

St. Timon's preaching of Christianity to the Ghassanids marked a significant cultural transformation. The Ghassanid Kingdom saw a rapid spread of Christianity, leading to the establishment of numerous Christian communities, each with its own bishop, church, and monastery.

The Ghassanids, who formed the first Christian Arab kingdom from the third century AD to the sixth, brought about a period of great prosperity to the region. Their rule saw a significant boost in economic and cultural development, leaving a lasting impact on the region (Zahran, 2006).

During the time of the Prophet Mohammad, as Islam was moving through the Middle East, the House of Ghassan were the kings of Damascus. The Prophet was so impressed with the King and his dedication to the Christian faith, Damascus remained Christian and as an admired fellow People of the Book (Ahl al-kitāb: أهل الكتاب).

The Royal House of Ghassan enjoys full and unparalleled international recognition. Very few deposed Royal Houses are currently recognized by the republics that previously held their territories.

The Ghassanid kings, emperors, and princes ruled several Middle Eastern regions, from 220 CE until the mid-18th century (Christian branch) and 1921 CE (Muslim branch), over 1500 years. Since the first Ghassanid State, the Royal Ghassanids have always enjoyed full recognition from friends and foes. The Sovereign Imperial and Royal House of Ghassan is the oldest active Christian Royal House in the world, whose sovereigns ruled over the largest territory for the longest period, more than any other Arab Dynasty.

During its most recent rule of a sovereign principality composed of territory in present-day Lebanon and Syria, the imperial and royal Ghassanid titles were officially recognized by the Ottoman Empire. Today the recognition continues by the Republic of Lebanon, as well as other nation-state members of the United Nations.
