It is with great sadness today that we learn that renowned Asian elephant expert and author Richard Lair has passed away. As one of the world's foremost experts on Asian elephants Richard's seminal publication "Gone Astray" continues to influence and guide many who work with Asian elephants and their welfare, in the wild and in captivity. For World Elephant Day (WED), Richard has been involved with us since the beginning of our work as a valuable advisor, and a good friend. Richard appears in our feature documentary When Elephants Were Young. We shared many great experiences together with elephants, in Thailand and the USA. Our condolences go out to everyone who has been touched by Richard's wisdom, insights, and words. Here's Richard with WED founder Patricia Sims at a World Elephant Day fundraising event for Veterinarians International in the Hamptons, USA, in 2016. Let's see your best in support of World Female Ranger Week!
THIS is why we're supporting World Female Ranger Week on June 23 – 30th!
Currently, less than 11% of the global wildlife ranger workforce is female. Through World Female Ranger Week, How Many Elephants aims to collate gender-specific data about female rangers, identify their needs, find tangible solutions and build effective policies to contribute towards positive outcomes for female rangers and conservation as a whole.
Together, we can support female rangers and protect wildlife and wild spaces.

In the world of animal & elephant conservation, rangers, and specifically female rangers, provide a vital line of defence between poachers and their prey. While exact figures vary, reports indicate a steady year-over-year increase in the number of female rangers across Africa. For instance, the International Anti-Poaching Foundation (IAPF) reported a 250% increase in the number of female rangers within their programs from 2018 to 2021.
Throughout this week, we will be showcasing the importance of female rangers in the protection of global elephant populations.
