Printz Honor recipient and Swedish author Moa Backe Åstot, a young Sami reindeer owner, will attend the ALA Conference in San Diego between June 26-30. Her debut novel, ”Fire From the Sky,” is the first by a Sami author to receive a Printz Honor. The book, which is one of the few translated and Indigenous-authored books to win this award, is a critically acclaimed coming-of-age story that delves into Sami heritage, family ties, and LGBTQ+ themes. It follows a young reindeer herder grappling with his sexuality and fearing rejection from his community. Åstot’s visit is supported by a grant from the Swedish Arts Council.
