In the spring of 1950, in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico, a young bear cub found himself caught in a burning forest. He took refuge in a tree, and while managing to stay alive was left badly burned. The firefighters who retrieved him were so moved by his bravery, they named him Smokey.

SKILLS
Students in Facilities Maintenance are trained in the following subject areas:
Using carpentry and masonry skills to maintain existing facilitiesπ
Learning to properly use tools and equipment to repair facility structures and systems, including plumbing and electricalπ·ββοΈ
Maintaining systems that keep a building safe and secure, and that control its environmentπ€

Developing skills in landscaping to maintain the facilityβs groundsπ
CAREER OPTIONS
Most Facilities Maintenance graduates go to work for commercial buildings, schools, or residential complexes. Facilities maintenance workers spend most of the workday on their feet, overseeing the general condition of a building. Most facilities maintenance workers are employed full time, while others work evening and weekend shifts or are on call for emergency repairs.
REQUIREMENTS

Tools, equipment, and basic techniques used in cooking and baking
Calculating measurements
Inspecting and cleaning food preparation areas, such as equipment, work surfaces, and serving areas, to ensure food is handled safely

CAREER OPTIONS
Most program graduates go to work in the food service industry, often for restaurants and catering services, or for institutions, such as schools, hospitals, or cafeterias. Laying and binding building materials, such as brick and concrete, with mortar or other substances to repair walls, partitions, arches, sewers, and other structures.
Measuring distances from reference points and marking guidelines to lay out work.
Properly constructing corners and arches
Removing excess mortar with trowels and hand tools.
Finishing joints with jointing tools, for a sealed, uniform appearance.
CAREER OPTIONS
Program graduates mostly go to work as brick masons or block masons for private companies or public works organizations.
Working as a brick mason or block mason is physically demanding work, and many days are spent outside.

Students in Cement Masonry are trained in the following subject areas:
Set and align forms of concrete for sidewalks, curbs, or gutters.
Check the concrete forms to see that they are properly constructed.
Smooth and finish surfaces of poured concrete with a variety of hand and power tools.
Patch voids and use saws to cut expansions.
CAREER OPTIONS
Most Cement Masonry graduates go to work for construction firms or contractors. This team-oriented work environment makes it easy to learn on the job and make friends. Cement masons typically work normal, full-time business hours, but occasionally are on call on the weekends to finish big projects.

What is Job Corps?
Job Corps is the largest nationwide residential career training program in the country and has been operating for more than 50 years. The program helps eligible young people ages 16 through 24 complete their high school education, trains them for meaningful careers, and assists them with obtaining employment. Job Corps has trained and educated over two million individuals since 1964.
At Job Corps, students have access to room and board while they learn skills in specific training areas for up to three years. In addition to helping students complete their education, obtain career technical skills and gain employment, Job Corps also provides transitional support services, such as help finding employment, housing, child care, and transportation. Job Corps graduates either enter the workforce or an apprenticeship, go on to higher education, or join the military.
