FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bristol Virginia Fire Department Awarded State Grant for Smoke Detectors

The Bristol, VA Fire Department has been awarded a Community Risk Reduction Smoke Alarm grant through the Virginia Department of Fire Programs. The goal of the grant program is to enhance fire and life safety of residences in the Commonwealth, particularly home owners in the City of Bristol, VA.

The Fire Department will receive a supply of smoke detectors that will be installed in Bristol, VA homes free of charge. The grant will greatly enhance the current smoke detector program already being offered to Bristol, VA residences by the Fire Department. The Department hopes to begin installing the free smoke detectors at the beginning of June.

To receive a free smoke detector, you can contact the Bristol, VA Fire Department at (276) 645-7420. Firefighters will arrange a time that is convenient with the homeowner and come out and install the smoke detector at no cost. Smoke detectors are available while supplies last.

Residences who rent or lease their home can receive a free smoke detector from the owner of the rental property. Bristol, VA Code, Sec. 50-569 requires that the owner of any unit that is rented or leased, at the beginning of each tenancy, and at least annually thereafter, shall furnish the tenant with a certificate that all required smoke detectors are present, have been inspected, and are in good working order.

Former Virginia Intermont Structure Fire

Bristol Virginia Fire Department firefighters were dispatched to the old Virginia Intermont College campus this evening (2/26/2024) at approximately 5:02. A caller reported seeing smoke coming from one of the old buildings on campus.

Crews from all three Bristol VA Fire Stations responded and a call went out to Bristol, TN Fire-Rescue for assistance.

First-arriving crews had difficulty locating the fire as it was burning deep inside one of the large buildings. Crews entered the large building that housed the swimming pool and discovered a fire burning in the actual swimming pool. Apparently, trespassers had set fire to rubbish and it appears the fire got out of hand. The fire created a large amount of smoke which made it impossible to breathe. No one was found inside the building.

Fire crews stretched hose lines into the building and extinguished the fire. Additional crews accessed the roof and opened sections of the roof to ventilate the smoke. The fire was contained to the pool. There were no injuries reported. The fire is being considered suspicious.

While crews worked to control the fire at the VI campus, a second structure fire occurred in the City on Magnolia Dr. Fire crews from Goodson-Kinderhook Fire Department and Bristol, TN Fire-Rescue responded to the second fire. Crews arrived to find a small fire in a dryer vent opening outside of a home. Thanks to the work of neighbors, the fire was quickly extinguished and caused only minimal damage!

Firefighters are continuously training to prepare for any call.

Yesterday B-Shift companies completed extrication training. This type of training involves removing vehicle doors, roofs, and manipulating other parts of the vehicle so that our firefighters can gain access to patients who are trapped within the vehicle.
