My first Olympia win.

After an incredible year of 1991 where I won the Night of Champions and later competed in my first Mr. Olympia where I placed second, 1992 was my year.

Lee Haney was Mr. Olympia and was going for his 8th title in 1991. He had the advantage of experience and presented a polished physique.

I did beat Lee on the muscularity round, a round in which he’d never been beaten before on, so that was a big boost for me.

Finishing second to a legend like Lee was a great achievement, I didn’t look at it as a defeat, rather a lesson.

Lee had now retired and the 1992 Mr. Olympia was up for grabs.

I headed back to the dungeon to work on my craft, to present a physique that was worthy of changing the game. I added eight pounds of lean muscle during the year and was heading to Helsinki with one thing on my mind.

The competition was as high as ever. Lee Labrada, Shawn Ray, Kevin Levrone and making a comeback after 17 years, Lou Ferrigno. All of us guys battling it out for the crown with a final top three of myself, Kevin and Lee.

I did it. I was Mr. Olympia.

This success was the crowning achievement of all the years of suffering and hard work. It was my destiny coming true.

I had to do it, it was like life or death passion that I put into it. And now, I look back and it's almost like I knew it was gonna happen. I had to make it happen but I almost knew that it would.

And after placing second in 1991, I would go on to finish 1st in the following 15 contests I did before I retired.
