ā¤ļøFebruary is Heart Health Monthā¤ļø

Varee was born with a Cardiac heart defect of abnormal heart valve, which was undiagnosed. This led to acute cardiac arrest which was the cause of his death. This can be prevented by having regular physicals and asking your child if they are experiencing any symptoms.

šŸŽ‰Celebrating Local Black HistoryšŸŽ‰

Jessie Menifield Rattley ā€“ (1929 ā€“ 2001)

In 1986, Jessie M. Rattley, a Democrat, became the first female and first Black mayor of Newport News, Virginia. Serving as mayor from 1986 ā€“ 1990, she also served for 16 years (1970 ā€“ 1986) as the first African American in the Newport News City Council. A groundbreaker throughout her career, she served on the board of directors of the National Municipal League from 1975 ā€“ 1979. In a recent Womenā€™s History Month tribute, 13NewsNow.com best captured the accomplishments of Mrs. Rattley:

Making history would be a reoccurring theme in Rattleyā€™s career.

In 1979, she served as the president of the National League of Cities, becoming the first Black person and the first woman in that position. She was a passionate educator, forming the business department as a teacher at Huntington High School in Newport News. Rattley also founded Peninsula Business College; the training there would help hundreds of Black Virginians secure jobs at a time when the workforce was decidedly unequal. Rattley was known across the region and the country as a civil rights pioneer, forming friendships within the Democratic Party. She was even an unofficial advisor to President Jimmy Carter on urban affairs. (13NewsNow.com ā€“ March 14, 2023)

Rattley succumbed to cancer in 2001. In 2005 Newport News City Hall and its surrounding buildings were named in her honor, the Jessie Menifield Rattley Municipal Center. She will be remembered as a trailblazer who made a difference in the lives of many.

~Celebrating The Slade's Black History~

John Autry Slade

Born in North Carolina in 1890, John Autry Slade, like many early 20th century African Americans in the rural South, migrated North and West during what is known as The Great Migration. Indeed, he was featured in the acclaimed Field to Factory: Afro-American Migration, 1915 ā€“ 1940 exhibition at the Smithsonianā€™s National Museum of American History from 1987 ā€“ 2006. A photograph of Mr. Slade, with his camera, was highlighted in the entrepreneur section of the exhibition. Migrating from North Carolina to Columbus, Ohio he worked as a construction worker at the WPA and later worked at Timken Roller Bearing steel factory until retirement. He turned his love of photography into a small business. The photograph, below, shows Mr. Slade with his photography on a street in Columbus and was featured in the Ohio Magazine. Initially he took photographs of passersby and after retirement from Timken, he had a photography studio on East Long Street in Columbus. Much of his photography included family portraits of clients who also came to his home living room for their family portraits. He also took portraits of his children and grandchildren during his visits, traveling North and South. A widower from his first marriage to Blanch Blackwell in Caswell County, NC, he married Ethel Marie Cordell Hairston in Columbus, Ohio. Together they [he and Ethel] had 15 children; including children from their previous marriages and together. Many of his children became entrepreneurs, owning small businesses that thrived for decades. His legacy lives on through the generations, many of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren are also successful entrepreneurs. He passed in November 1966 at the age of 76.

Congratulations to Victor Slade for making Black History as the Author of a book that depicts the life & struggles of a family that has lost a child. Victor says; ā€œBlack history is an important part of our existence. It is important that our children know who they are and the struggles that their ancestors endured. Also, to know the contributions they made to our country. Itā€™s vital that they know their lineage.ā€ Check out his book https://amzn.to/3M0Ghwl Congratulations again for being brave and telling your story.
