During her time at Queens, Kayla Hoch built a strong foundation in media production and broadcasting while earning her degree in Communication with a minor in Media Studies and Popular Culture. Her dedication to her education opened the door to an exciting fellowship with FOX Sports through Sports Biz Careers. Over the summer, she dove deep into sports broadcasting, production, and promo creation, gaining invaluable experience and connections.
This fellowship was a game-changer—offering her the chance to learn from top industry leaders, contribute to high-profile FOX Sports coverage, and kickstart a career she’s truly passionate about. Today we unite for a day of reflection, service, and community 🇺🇸 Join us and our Student Veterans Association, QU4 Troops, for a Patriot Day and National Day of Remembrance Program honoring those whose lives were lost or changed because of the events of September 11, 2001.
📍Remembrance Ceremony: Today, September 11th, we will gather at 8:30 AM in the academic quad for a flag-laying ceremony, followed by a moment of silence at 8:46 AM.
📍Unite with Coffee & Croissants: Join us for an open house in the Veterans Lounge (Dana 006) from 9-10 AM for coffee, croissants, and cinnamon rolls, courtesy of Belk Chapel. Veterans and non-veterans are invited to come meet and connect.

Inspired by Dr. Devi Shetty's work providing low-cost surgeries in India, first-year student Sandhya Konar '28 is making strides on her path to neurosurgery. Her journey at Queens began this fall as she majors in biochemistry—her first step toward medical school and a future in neurosurgery.
Queens was Sandhya's choice because of its supportive, intellectually challenging environment. Here, she's looking forward to building close relationships with her professors and peers, all while pursuing her passion for learning and collaborative discovery.

🚴 Seth Rider: Former Queens triathlete made his Olympic debut for Team USA in the individual men's triathlon on July 31, placing 29th. He competes again on August 5 in the men's triathlon mixed relay.
🚴 Felix Duchampt: 2015 graduate and Queens Athletics Hall of Fame inductee placed 50th for Romania in the men's individual triathlon during his second Olympic Games on July 31.
🏊♀️ Hannah Aspden: 2022 graduate and 2024 Team Captain of U.S. Paralympics Swimming, competing in the Paralympics from August 28 - September 8. Aspden won her first career gold medal in the women’s 100-meter backstroke S9 during the 2020 Tokyo Games and added another gold in the 400-meter medley relay.

During Creative Writing Camp, hosted by the Queens English Department, campers created Zines, wrote songs, learned about fan fiction, and more! With inspiring workshops led by alums and a memorable group pantoum with Professor Morri Creech, these campers are ready to bring their stories to life.
Authors Alissa DeRogatis and Meg Rosenthal '19 also stopped by to answer campers' questions about the publishing process and what it's like to be a published author. Be sure to check out their novels: "Right Words" by Rosenthal and "Call It What You Want" by DeRogatis.

Exciting news from Royals Baseball! Our very own Dillon Lewis has been selected by the New York Yankees as the 391st pick in the 13th round of the 2024 MLB Draft.⚾️🎉
Lewis had a historic 2024 season, starting all 55 games for the Royals and achieving a .371 batting average with 14 doubles, 22 home runs, 63 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases. He now becomes the second Royal to be drafted, joining Tanner Jacobson, who was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2022.

The Royal Voices of Charlotte are on a winning streak! 🎶 After taking first place in an international competition last summer, this talented auditioned chamber choir—featuring Queens students, alumni, and community singers—has done it again.
Scoring an impressive 96.4/100 from an international jury, Royal Voices claimed the top spot at the prestigious Preveza International Choral Festival in Greece. They also received the festival's only special jury prize for the best performance of a new choral work.

Last year, we navigated a pivotal shift in higher education following the Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action. As Adrienne Oddi, Queens' Vice President of Strategic Enrollment and Communications, shared with The Washington Post, “our world was entering a new era.”
While Queens has long pursued diversity without factoring race into admissions decisions, the ruling necessitated operational adjustments. Oddi reflects, “We lost an essential tool in our toolkit—part of each student’s story, their identity.” This challenge has spurred us to explore new strategies to reach diverse student populations.

Queens University students Mckenna Hill and Sarah Quigley recently worked with Freedom Fighting Missionaries to shed light upon the resilience of formerly incarcerated individuals, embodying the Queens motto, “Not to be served, but to serve.” They recently presented their research at the organization's annual gala. Kenny Robinson, founder and executive director of Freedom Fighting Missionaries, mentored the students as they studied re-entry and justice reform here in Charlotte. Way to go, Royals!
