How do we "shop local"? With support from the NC Manufacturing Extension Project, our college is able to include small businesses in our senior design program, right alongside our Fortune 500 partners. Small businesses often are not able to financially support our program, but the NC MEP resources open up more opportunity. To learn how this comes to life, go behind the scenes with us to our partner, Cloister Honey.

Jordan Madren, Jr. Mechanical Engineering major with a concentration in Motorsports is interning at Hendrick Motorsports as a Composites Technician Apprentice. In Hendrick's Composite Shop, Jordan makes carbon fiber parts for NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series cars, ensuring safety components like seats and headrests meet SFI certification.
"Charlotte’s motorsports program with Professors Stover & Fox, along with the general mechancial engineering courses, have been really helpful, providing me a good groundwork for working with the teams. They helped me better understand the engineering drawings for the carbon fiber parts we produce at HMS The engineering mindset allowed me to suggest changes or adjustments to the parts themselves or the carbon fiber layup process."
Congratulations to Daniel Saraphis, Niner Engineer researching in BATT CAVE, on being named NC Space Grant Fellow! Way to , Daniel!

Colin Eaton, soph. Mechanical Engineering major with concentration in Motorsports, is interning with Alpha Prime Racing in Mooresville. As an Assistant Engineer, Colin manages the simulator for drivers Brennan Poole and Ryan Ellis, and engineers for the part-time car, the 45. He collaborates with his crew chief, develops race strategies, handles car setup, and logs driver comments and serves as pit support during races.

Jason Bird, concentrating in Biomedical Engineering, is interning with UNC Health Prosthetics and Orthotics, shadowing clinicians as they treat patients and modifying devices, such as replacing defective parts.
Jason credits Charlotte for his preparation: "The Helping Hand Project at UNC Charlotte, mentored by Dr. Chi, was my first exposure to the prosthetic field. The club's aim to provide custom 3D-printed prosthetic arms to children sparked my interest. My classes, especially Mechanics of Human Locomotion taught by Dr. Nigel Zheng, helped me understand anatomy, technical terms, and how forces are distributed in the body during motion."
"Experiences in the lab are invaluable when solving real-world problems. They provide a fast filter that allows narrowing of the potential solution space to happen quickly.”
